Shutdown battle shows GOP’s 'wingnut caucus' doesn’t understand constitutional governance: journalist

With a federal government shutdown looming, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is making a last-ditch effort to work out some type of funding agreement with far-right members of his caucus. But talks haven't been going well, and McCarthy's frustration is obvious.

Meanwhile, Democrats are arguing that a shutdown debacle could be avoided if far-right House Republicans would simply honor the bipartisan debt ceiling agreement that McCarthy and President Joe Biden reached earlier this year.

National labor leader rips into Trump 'lies': 'Catastrophic for workers'

Former President Donald Trump was ripped to shreds by the leader of The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations in a scathing Detroit Free Press op-ed calling out his history of empty promises to union workers over the years.

The article came out in response to Trump's rally with workers at a nonunion auto parts shop in Michigan, where he attacked electric vehicle incentives and claimed President Joe Biden was destroying the industry — a day after the president joined the picket line of striking United Auto Workers in Detroit.

Oath Keepers continued funneling money to seditious leader for months following arrest

The Oath Keepers continued paying dues to the anti-government's vice president for nearly a year after the Jan. 6 attack.

The payments continued flowing to Venmo accounts linked to Oath Keepers senior leader Jason Ottersberg and came from an engineer whose employer does work for the Department of Defense and Homeland Security, while others linked to organization leaders -- including now-imprisoned founder Stewart Rhodes -- include a U.S. Navy recruiting officer, reported The Guardian.

Morning Joe mocks GOP 'incompetence' for calling impeachment witnesses who 'undermine' their case

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough ridiculed the first Republican-led impeachment inquiry hearing into President Joe Biden.

GOP lawmakers struggled to make their case that the president benefitted from his son Hunter Biden's business dealings during the six-hour hearing, and the "Morning Joe" host was amazed that three witnesses Republicans called were unable to offer direct knowledge of any wrongdoing and made clear there was no impeachable evidence.

'Not evidence of anything': Dem lawmaker dismantles 'desperate' GOP impeachment arguments on CNN

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) took to CNN on Friday morning to demolish House Republicans' arguments for impeaching President Joe Biden, which center on unproven allegations that he laundered overseas bribes through the foreign business dealings of his son Hunter Biden.

This comes after the House Oversight Committee's first impeachment hearing, widely regarded as a disaster by observers as their own witnesses failed to put forward any pieces of evidence for their claims.

'They owned the Republicans!' Former Trump official fumes over GOP's widely panned impeachment hearing

Former Trump counterterrorism adviser Sebastian Gorka this week fumed at House Republicans' widely criticized impeachment inquiry hearing into President Joe Biden, and he said he was appalled at the way Democrats commanded the narrative.

"They owned the Republicans!" he shouted while talking with Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast. "Utterly owned them! I mean think about it, what did we learn today, Steve? It was impeachment 48 of President Trump! They turned the whole thing into photographs of Ivanka, photographs of Jared!"

Trump, in campaign mode, attempts to back off abortion

Donald Trump never misses a chance to remind voters that he was the one to appoint three justices to the US Supreme Court who voted to ditch the federal right to an abortion.

But ask the 77-year-old what he thinks personally about abortion, and his position starts to shift, the self-declared "most pro-life president in American history" well aware of what a hardline stance might cost him at the polls.

Biden warns U.S. democracy in peril from 'extremist' Trump

President Joe Biden launched a blistering personal attack on "extremist" Donald Trump Thursday, accusing his likely 2024 challenger of plotting to subvert the US constitution if he wins a return to power next year.

The Democrat said in a speech in the battleground state of Arizona that Republican frontrunner Trump was driven by "vengeance and vindictiveness", and he urged Americans to stand up for democracy before it was too late.

'They got run over!' CNN panel stunned by GOP's 'disaster' Biden impeachment hearing

A CNN panel on Friday expressed astonishment that House Republicans appeared so unprepared for their first impeachment hearing inquiry into President Joe Biden.

After playing a supercut of witnesses at the hearing saying that they had seen no evidence that would justify impeaching Biden, host Phil Mattingly shared an anonymous quote from a House Republican aide who described the inquiry as an "unmitigated disaster."

Republicans must ignore those that will 'visit Trump in jail one day': Ex-GOP Georgia official

Republicans need to get over the obsession that a large portion of their base has with Donald Trump and simply move on for the good of the party, former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan told CNN anchor Anderson Cooper on Thursday evening — the people who, he argued, would happily visit the former president in prison should he be convicted in any of the four indictments currently pending against him.

"Lieutenant Governor Duncan, do you think the country's democratic institutions are strong enough to withstand being tested again in 2024?" asked Cooper.

GOPer urges fellow Republicans to put Biden impeachment aside to keep government open

Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO), a conservative stalwart and longtime member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus who has been increasingly at odds with many of his colleagues, warned on CNN that the House GOP needs to put impeachment of President Joe Biden on hold — at least for the time being — and focus on keeping the government open.

"Let's talk about the impeachment inquiry and the shutdown that you mentioned," said anchor Anderson Cooper. "When you look at it juxtaposed with the government shutdown, does it concern you about House Republicans' priorities here?"

'It sucks': Ex-Trump adviser has harsh words for GOPers who want to spite McCarthy

The Freedom Caucus is hellbent on a government shutdown simply for the sake of it at this point, argued former Trump campaign senior adviser David Urban on Thursday's edition of CNN's "The Lead."

This comes as Republicans try to advance an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, with no clear offense they're even charging him with, all the while at an impasse over getting appropriation bills passed and at each others' throats behind closed doors.
