The Cheney family has played a significant role in creating the "monster that is the modern Republican Party," but only someone like Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) could make someone like Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) look like a victim, according to Esquire's Charles Pierce.
Cheney was one of only 10 Republicans to vote to impeach former President Donald Trump this month, blaming him for the violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
Now, Gaetz is traveling to her own backyard in Wyoming to "talk about the failed leadership of Liz Cheney within our party and the failed policies that she advocates for."
"In a purely academic sense, it is not comfortable to watch one of the two political parties that America allows itself eating its own entrails for breakfast," writes Pierce. "On a purely emotional level, of course, it is an infinitely satisfying exercise, and an unquestionably just outcome for all concerned."
He added that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was a "perpetual hostage to the wingnuts" in this party.
Despite initially casting blame on Trump for the U.S. Capitol riot, McCarthy later reversed course. He is reportedly meeting with the ex-president sometime on Thursday.
