Mike Davis, a conservative attorney and close Trump ally who founded the Article III Project, drew alarm Sunday after lashing out at Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) with a curse-laden rant, one that critics argued contained a less-than-subtle threat to assassinate the Michigan Democrat.
Speaking at the University of Chicago last week, Slotkin, a former CIA analyst, said she hoped Democrats’ planned investigations into alleged corruption in the Trump administration would serve as a “deterrence” to young Americans considering jobs in the administration. Her comments sparked outrage in conservative circles.
“If [Slotkin] deploys these fascist tactics, like illegal arrests and political persecutions to intimidate young Americans with opposing political views, she will learn why we have the Second Amendment,” Davis wrote in a social media post on X. “F--- her and her CIA tactics.”
Davis’ reference to the Second Amendment, which enshrines Americans’ right to keep and bear arms, alarmed several onlookers.
“So Davis goes on from lying about Elissa Slotkin to threatening her with assassination,” wrote journalist Josh Marshall, founder of Talking Points Memo. “The idea of prosecution for criminal conduct is one that outrages and terrifies Mike Davis. This is the heart of the rot and moral corruption of MAGA.”
Jon Favreau, a prominent podcast host who previously wrote speeches for former President Barack Obama, also expressed shock at Davis’ apparent threat, one Favreau noted was prompted by a senator trying to “hold Trump officials accountable for corruption through congressional oversight.”
Even conservative attorney Gregg Nunziata was taken aback by Davis’ remarks.
“Some people desperately want to invite political violence. They rush to defame, twist truth, manufacture crisis. That’s the opposite of conservatism. The fascist here isn’t the senator,” Nunziata wrote in a social media post on X.
