Pandagon

You're young and stupid, so here, let me half-ass this issue for you

I just listened to the most recent episode of "This American Life" about people who had firmly held beliefs that they then changed. What was interesting about it was that they didn't actually detail the process of anyone really shedding a deeply held belief, so it was kind of a rip-off. The closest was the woman who came to realize that her ugly-ass super-80s acid-washed jeans did not actually turn her husband on, but the opposite. Which was a great story, actually, and I highly recommend it.

My final post on the Miss California flap - and a smackdown of Roland Martin

I didn't want to waste any more precious energy on this dustup, but I was curious about what Miss North Carolina's view on marriage equality was.

Of course false confessions were the point

Sometimes I sit around, especially after reading a spate of dissenting blog comments, and think, "I'm too cynical of a person". And then I read something like this (hat tip) and I realize that I've been in error all this time, because I wasn't cynical enough.

Dude Nation turns Supreme Court stupid

One of the major problems with lack of female representation in Congress and the courts is that even when men are generally liberal and try to get it, the boys club mentality seems to set in and infect their ability to act like compassionate adults who grasp that women are full human beings instead of slightly comical pieces of meat. (Of course there's always exceptions---shout out to Henry Waxman!) Ruth Bader Ginsburg must have retired to her office today and spouted off like a cliched cop in a B movie, "I'm too old for this shit," which is lately a common problem for her as the sole voice on the court to consistently and loudly attempt to remind her fellows that women are people.

National Organization for Marriage Snail Mail DOMA FAIL

The National Organization for Marriage needs some cash now that it's flushed who knows how much down the crapper with that ridiculous ad a week or so ago. So it's back to the drawing board -- traditional direct mail. One of my readers, Orion 45, passed along a copy of this fish wrap. Their campaign is to beg for buxx to fund its "DOMA Defense Fund." Because, you know, that "President Obama has declared war on the Defense of Marriage Act." If only.

Creepy contest: Alec Baldwin vs. Caitlin Flanagan

It's really a toss-up between these two, who have been thrown together because Flanagan was asked to review Alec Baldwin's new book "Bitches Ain't Shit". Sorry the title is "A Promise to Ourselves ". I have no doubt that Flanagan was assigned because her editors assumed that she would be behind what appears to be a typical MRA screed that's just been elevated because of Baldwin's fame, but a funny thing happens when even the most anti-feminist of women, should they have a single brain cell rattling around in their heads, confronts the seething misogyny of MRAs that is only barely disguised by an obsessive detailing of court interactions that make them sound at times more like they're recounting sports statistics than compiling evidence for their bullshit case of why women need to roll over and take their shit. Flanagan isn't the sharpest pencil, but she is a grade B moron, unlike the grade A-ers like Dr. Helen, who fall over themselves defending men's inalienable right to be abusive pricks, if they so desire. And while Flanagan tries to believe that Baldwin was done wrong by the court system, she can't ignore the fact that he acted like a massive, entitled asshole, and his problems with his daughter are his fault, not his ex-wife's. So she actually calls him out.

Cleveland Young Republican teabagger - the stupid, it burns

The future of the GOP, unedited, courtesy of Tim Russo @ Blogger Interrupted. Mr. Young Republican is tired of footing the bill for society ("I'm not going to pay for you, I'm not going to carry everyone else on my back any more...try and get a job." ). It goes downhill from there.

Activist judges can change minds

Reading this back and forth between Matt and Neil about how likely it would be to build a political consensus that torture is wrong, I was struck by how much Matt is propping up a false dilemma in the seemingly innocuous statement that we should prioritize building that consensus over prosecuting the culprits.

Please, for the love of god, will someone get what's wrong with Eliot Spitzer?

Eliot Spitzer's trying to make a comeback. Many dudes are on board. Others say, "Lay off the man, he was just horny". Women, who spend much of their lives trying to tease out "just horny" from "woman-hating freakazoid" (which are sadly conflated in our culture) for their own safety, are much more likely to have reservations.
