The Advocate interviews mom of 11-year-old who committed suicide over gay taunts

Eleven-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover did not have to die. He wrapped an extension cord around his neck and hanged himself, leaving this earth because of months of anti-gay taunts by his classmates at New Leadership Charter School in Springfield, MA. The Advocate's William McGuinness interviewed his mother, Sirdeaner Walker. This story is almost too painful for words.

Teabagging Gov. Rick Perry says it's time for the Lone Star State to secede

I'm loving this batsh*t insanity way too much. So Governor Goodhair and Chuck Norris are ready to take their balls home to make a go of it as the great nation of Texas. Rick Perry joined the club as he spoke to reporters after the local teabagging affair in Austin. (Houston Chronicle):

Royalists want a little revolutionary action of their own

I'm sure everyone under the sun has seen this amusing commentary by David Schuster about the ridiculousness of the teabaggers. And while I enjoyed every double and single entendre, I think I might have laughed the hardest when he pointed out that the fundamental difference between the teabaggers and the original Boston Tea Party is that the latter group was protesting taxation without representation, which is admittedly a long phrase with many syllables, so it's no wonder the teabaggers zone out after they hear "tax".

Winger Tea Bagger calls Obama a 'fascist'

These ignorant wingers are out and about protesting government spending at the Tea Parties being held today, calling the president a fascist. Wait, I thought he was a socialist.

Sinful, sinful sodas

William Saletan---who has no problem understanding that pleasure is basically seedy and needs to be punished when it comes to shaming women who have abortion for being irresponsible sluts, and (hat tip Daily Texan writer who told me about this) encouraging a moral panic about anal sex---has decided to change his tune when it comes to the sweet, sugary pleasures of drinking soda. (Hat tip.) I guess drinking soda isn't an illicit sex act associated with gay men, and it's not indisputable proof that some lady had Teh Sex, so what could be wrong with it? But what's hilarious about Saletan's approach is that he's misreading the mainstream opinion on these issues. Look, even James Dobson admits his life's work of pushing women into the kitchen and gays in the closet was a failure, and the culture is trending in the other direction (with lots of pushing from feminists---and yes, despite the patriarchal implications, we do accept flowers as thank you gifts).

Amazon Fail: Clarification

I realized, from the comment section and email, that I may not have been entirely clear in my post, which made it sound like I don't believe that it could have been a coding error of sorts. I think the base event that caused this to happen could have been a non-native English speaker trying to inject tags he assumed were code for "porn". And that's exactly what people mean when they say that there's systemic oppression. Gay people and feminists seem more porn-like, because independent women and gays are sexualized to a degree that straight men are, so of course certain words remind people of sex more. More even than blatant pornography, which has been mainstreamed to such a strong degree. Ron Jeremy's a mainstream figure, for instance, and "Girls Gone Wild" is advertised on cable TV. Playboy magazine has had more mainstream TV shows that feminists could command. Marginalized drifts to "illicit" in people's minds, and so an honest mistake could also be the product of systemic oppression.

Amazon Fail: A Follow-Up

Well, the hopes that Amazon was just an innocent victim of a bantown event or right wing complaint campaign have been shot to hell. The company released an official statement about deranking nearly 58,000 titles that had feminist, LGBT, or sex-positive* titles, and unfortunately, it's not satisfactory and indicates that the deranking was, in fact, intentional-ish:

Entire expanses of land earn my undying contempt

I didn't see it until this morning (hat tip), but Daily Kos commissioned a study to measure people's susceptibility to bizarro right wing propaganda against New York City, San Francisco, France, and Europe in general, and the results are quite telling. A majority of people across the country---male and female, Democratic and Republican---were pro-these geographic locations except in the South, where favorable opinions of all of the above hovered in the mid-40s. Now, if they had separated the rest of the West from the coastal states, they might have gotten different results, but the point remains---the South is isolated from the rest of the country somehow, and it's making them batty.

Arkansas: National Car Rental Employee To Trans Customer: 'Screwed-Up Man Faggot'

This is a post by one of the contributors to my blog, Autumn Sandeen, who was contacted by the victim in this case to expose atrocious treatment of a transperson by a National Rental Car staffer and the Little Rock Police Department .We rarely talk about transgender issues here, and it's an eye-opener at how messed-up we are as a culture. One of my readers made this apt comment: "Although we in the LGBT community think of homophobia and transphobia as two different things, sometimes the haters can't tell the difference between us -- homophobia and transphobia are functionally the same thing for them."
