Ken Blackwell defends Saltsman's Barack the Magic Negro CD

The former Ohio vote bag man Secretary of State and contender for the head of the RNC, Ken Blackwell, had this to say about the holiday CD sent to committee members by fellow candidate for the job, Chip Saltsman:

Anti-vaccination = anti-feminist?

Well, not intentionally, but there is a reason to think that anti-vaccination ideologists could hurt women more than men, amongst other damage that they can do. I finally had a chance to listen to a recent "This American Life" that dealt with, amongst other things, an outbreak of the measles in San Diego that was caused by parents refusing to vaccinate their kids because they've been fed and believe the misinformation about how dangerous vaccines are. The show is sympathetic to the parents who are caught up in this panic, since obviously they're the same Whole Foods-shopping, over-anxious yuppies that make up the audience and staff of "This American Life". The reporter understands how you want to control everything your kid eats or is exposed to, and how obsessed some parents get with the concept of purity in their kids' input. (Which really is completely understandable, since you are what you eat.) Though I do have to wonder why the same people who refuse to trust the FDA, the CDC, the AMA, their own doctors, a multitude of scientists, and the entire medical community when it comes to vaccines happily trust a cardboard box at Whole Foods that says that the item inside is organic. If the FDA won't or can't control vaccine safety, then why on earth would they be able to ensure that organic food really is organic? There's a darkly funny moment on the show when the initial quarantine announcements warned people who shopped at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's that they were in the greatest danger of exposure.

WSJ op-ed: Prop 8 backlash shows need to change donor disclosure laws

You knew this was coming -- those who donated to help pass Proposition 8 are angry that boycotts and actions were taken to publicize their decision to foment bigotry. Now there is a call to make that information about their donations secret.

Gossip is political

I was touched by Sarah Hepola's optimistic article about how the growing celebrity gossip industry hit its peak and is now waning. In 2008, real issues became increasingly hard to ignore, and celebrity gossip finally took a second page to these issues many times. The election swept up a lot of that energy, for one thing, and of course the economy tanking didn't help things. Which says to me that when real issues hit people where they live, they pay attention, and of course the economy hits people where they live, but I think this election did more than others, because it became a symbolic assault on white male supremacy, reflecting changes that people see in their own lives. Changes that make many white people, men especially, angry, and thereby eligible for being played like fiddles by the right wing noise machine. But that's a topic for another post.

Washington Times columnist: Pope Benedict hasn't a hateful homophobic bone in his body

Frequent visitors to Pandagon and my pad know that we monitor Pope Benedict's incessant bigot eruptions, including the latest one. This time it involved a speech to senior Vatican staff where the homo-obsessed Pope said that saving humanity from gays and transfolk was as critical as protecting the environment. I blogged about it and said:

Candidate running for RNC chair distributes CD with 'Barack the Magic Negro'

That Mike Huckabee selected Chip Saltsman to run his campaign and that brainiac Saltzman decided to send a Christmas greeting to RNC committee members with "Barack the Magic Negro" on it says a lot about the caliber of leadership waiting in the wings, doesn't it? The Hill:

(Devoted Catholic and heterosexual) Psycho Santa opens fire at ex in-laws' home

I've been purposely avoiding cable news over the holiday, but when I signed on to put a couple of posts in the queue, I saw the horrific story about the -- psycho Santa who opened fire in his in-laws' Covina, California home, killing 8 (a ninth person is missing). I'm sure you all have seen the massive coverage of this by now.

Theocratic or pro-choice: Not much middle ground between them

I'm almost a little worried about engaging on this topic, though I'm grateful to Auguste for pointing out that the Raving Atheist finally completed his conversion 2 and a half years after I said that he would have to or the cognitive dissonance would break him down. Ever since I wrote that post, he's been violently angry at me, to the point where it's scary, so it's worrisome to pay attention and feed his super-narcissism. But this isn't and has never been about the sad little dweeb who was giving online atheism a bad name. This is about the relationship between atheism and feminism, or more specifically, between humanism and feminism, with the understanding that most atheists are humanists and rationalists. (Raving Atheist, however, appeared to be an assholist.) I tend to think that a science-and-reason-based worldview will slowly but surely chip away at sexism. A lot of feminists would no doubt violently disagree, pointing out all the historical examples of science-based sexism, but my argument is that the way to push back against science that's based in prejudice-justification instead of actual evidence and reason is to apply evidence and reason. No one is saying that science comes up with perfect solutions right out of the box, but that's no reason to abandon it. The history of science is chock full of sexist blathering, but it's just as chock full of examples of people bravely putting reason before sexism and prevailing.
