Evolutionary pyschology: Where Nice Guys® go for grant money

Echidne and Figleaf are both posting on a study by Daniel Kruger that supposedly proves that women can't help it, but our very genes tell us to rip off our clothes and hop on someone's cock the second we realize that he's in a higher tax bracket than average. Nothing gets the motor of deceitful, shallow females running like a jerk with cash, don't you know? Is it me, or is the entire field of evolutionary psychology being run by Nice Guys® with ulterior motivations? Maybe it would be a more respectable field if they were able to get rid of the Nice Guys®.

Episcopal priests' resolution - clergy must decline contracting, blessing civil marriages

I recently received an email from the Reverend Randall J. Keeney, who is an Episcopal priest in Greensboro, NC. Keeney and two retired priests will introduce a resolution at the Episcopal church's convention in January 2009 that will surely roil the gathering. While it is self-evident to reality-based people that civil and religious marriage are separate matters, it's quite controversial in the church for faith leaders to point out the obvious. Keeney is putting his position on the line since he's still a member of the clergy at St. Barnabas.

Bamboo Reviews: Milk

Though it's been out for a couple of weeks, the theater was packed last night for the showing of "Milk", and it's obviously so popular that the Alamo Drafthouse downtown had opened up both screens for it. And it definitely deserved that turnout, and not just because Harvey Milk is such an interesting character from history. I have my issues with some of Gus Van Sant's choices in the past, but he turned out to be the perfect director for this movie for a couple of major reasons. The most obvious is that he's comfortable with homosexuality and confident in his film-making, which meant that he portrayed the subculture of the 70s era Castro district with a realistic ease. But he also had the smarts to avoid certain traps of biopics that make them so often tedious and hard to watch. He avoided the tendency to render complicated real life people into stereotypes of pure evil or pure good, and he didn't dwell in sensationalism.

More Of Blackazoid's "Change"

imageOverly presumptuous negro faux-president Barack Hussein Obama just went off his rocker (or is that rapper?), politely asking that the First Family of Funk be allowed to take up temporary residence in the Blair House, the guest house of the President. Abe Greenwald:

John Dean on Prop 8 and the blame game

While he's a little late with a reaction to the results of Prop 8, John Dean weighs in with an insightful look at the matter of race and the ballot initiative, "Why Claims that Black Californians Deserve Blame for the Passage of California’s Anti-Gay-Marriage Proposition 8 Are Unfair and Untrue."

Colin Powell smacks down the wingnut faction of the GOP

It wasn't just his reassessment of DADT that has Colin Powell on a roll. He blasted the politics of the McCain Mobs in his endorsement of Barack Obama, and now he's taking a torch to the GOP for its inability to see its enthusiastic bigot appeal is limited. He said the party as it exists cannot sustain itself by turning a blind eye to the browning of America. He reserves special disdain for Hillbilly Heroin devotee Rush Limbaugh. (CNN Politicker):

White House will bail out automakers instead

So, what was all that debate about?

Why do we have a Congress? It increasingly seems they don't have any power at all.

Auto bailout fails. What a mess.

The deal died in the Senate, so Wall Street's likely to take a dive.

When is dysfunction not dysfunction?

I've seen this story all over the blogs---according to ACOG, 44% of women suffer from sexual dysfunction, usually low desire. But only 12% said it bothered them. Which makes a reasonable person wonder if, in a world where we respected women's opinion of themselves as we respect men's opinion, we wouldn't be showing that only 12% of women have sexual problems. In fact, it seems that the researchers themselves are open about how we frame the expectations put on women in terms of what men want.
