Sarah's goose egg on SCOTUS

Here it is...what you've been waiting for -- yet another Sarah Palin self-immolation, via Katie Couric. The video where McCain's veep nom can't name any Supreme Court cases.

Sneakers will mean immediate termination. And not the fun kind.

I've narrowed down the reason that Sarah Palin gave her "all of them" nonsensical answer to Katie Couric when asked what newspapers and magazines she reads to two major possibilities: a) She doesn't read or b) She realized that any answer she gave would be picked to death for hints of either Bircher right wing nuttery or librul taint. I'm inclined to say a), because there's a perfectly good answer to avoid b), which is the Wall Street Journal. Not a big surprise, and not offensive to the nutty base.

Busted - Elaine Donnelly's secret, desperate meeting to preserve DADT

The economy's in a meltdown, the troops are still fighting with no end in sight, but Elaine Donnelly and the The Center for Military Readiness have a laser focus on important matters. She is well aware that Don't Ask, Don't Tell is likely to go by the wayside, particularly if Obama is elected, and because the polling shows that most Americans in and out of the military see no good reason why gays and lesbians cannot openly serve.

She Just Doesn't See That "Race" Thing

The right, led by Michelle Malkin, is up in arms about the fact that Gwen Ifill is writing a totally mega-positive book about the fact that Barack Obama is black and that's both unusual and progressive in American presidential politics.

First Rule: Don't Panic

I haven't posted much on the bailout, because I needed time to digest what was happening and really think it over. (Which is going to be the theme of this post, if you read the title correctly.) I can't help but smile to think of how things have gone down, in a sense. The Bush administration deliberately set out to cause a panic in order to get the most money they could with the fewest number of strings attached. For a time, it looked like it was going to happen. But the Founding Fathers created a system that is supposed to move with deliberation and be accountable to the voters, and sure enough, this time it worked. The Bush administration has always operated under the assumption that deliberation is their enemy, mostly because they have a bunch of ideas that won't pass scrutiny. Finally, Congress is doing (part) of their job.

It's time for today's McCain/Palin Political Theatre

It's hard to keep up with the insane remarks coming out of the mouths of both McCain and Palin at this point, so I figured that I would share some that popped up today. The latest - Palin on her belief that homosexuality is a choice.

Over the line?

I agree with Ann on this issue. The Obama campaign has put out feelers, looking for a rape survivor who is willing to film a campaign commercial for them to highlight the differences between the Obama/Biden ticket's support for women, and especially victims of hate crimes against women, and the McCain/Palin ticket, which is laden with an ugly history from the rape kits debacle to McCain's no votes on various bills to fight violence against women. Considering that there is a legitimate difference between the tickets, then this is not "playing politics". Politics is the stuff of real life, and when we put something like violence against women out of the reach of "playing politics", we fail to understand that violence against women is a political issue and politicians should address it. I like how Ann puts it:

Back In Action

Sorry I've been away the past day or so - Mort went in for a successful surgery yesterday, and is now back home panting with red and blue leg bandages. A tiny bit miraculously, with help getting up, he can already walk around on his own for brief spurts, which has him thinking that he's perfectly fine and we're just torturing him with a needless leg shaving and restrictive bandaging.

'Impotent' Bush's feeble speech on the economic meltdown and bailout

Dear Leader, who looked like he wishes January 20, 2009 was here and he could be helicoptered to safety out of DC, stepped before the podium from the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House and spoke for a mere four minutes about the devastation going on in the markets and the legislation on the Hill. It was a feeble, inadequate, robotic speech in a time of financial crisis that required real information to be delivered to the average person out there. (Via Think Progress):
