Is John McCain Capable Of Being Correct?

imageAlthough much attention has been paid to John McCain's manufacturing a new surge timeline in Iraq, let us not forget that he's also manufacturing the psychology of the oil market.

Iowa GOP denies Sen. Grassley delegate slot over his televangelist investigation

The religious right in Iowa, which has a stranglehold on the state GOP, has decided to punish one of its main supporters -- Sen. Charles Grassley -- for spearheading an investigation into fraudulent practices of prominent televangelists. The party has denied the conservative senator a spot as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN. Americans United for Separation of Church and State:

The Peter's call to preserve DADT illustrated with graphic from fetish porn site

In order to bring home his point that gays and lesbians openly serving will lead to TEH GAY SECKS, foe of all things homosexual, Peter LaBarbera, chose to illustrate his post with a graphic pulled from a site dedicated to military man-on-man porno. So while Elaine Donnelly is fixated on rampant "lesbian assaults" that will naturally occur on unsuspecting enlisted women if DADT is repealed, LaBarbera has other visions in mind.

Bamboo Review: The Dark Knight

imageThe Dark Knight apparently being the most popular movie ever, reviewing it is a bit of an odd task. On the one hand, the receipts say everyone loved this movie. On the other hand, I didn't. (Warning: spoilers ahead.)

Marriage: Because we need you all figured out

Courtney Martin has a moving piece up at the Prospect about how the legalization of gay marriage is making her rethink her own resistance to entering into straight marriage. She concludes what I have in my life, which is that even though it's important to cheer on gay marriage, for straight people, there's still a major danger that the historical patriarchal institution will suck you in and destroy brain like a brain slug. She says it nicer than me, though. Jesse Singal tries to argue her into getting married, thereby neatly proving the point that good, old-fashioned heterosexual marriage still functions largely as a way to pressure women into getting in line. There are just some things that a man can't argue a woman into doing by saying it's not sexist, and marriage is up there, along with boob jobs. By exerting the pressure, you're disproving your argument, really.

Unhinged Don't Ask, Don't Tell supporter Donnelly provides comic relief during House hearing

Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, testified at today's House Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee's hearings on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and if I were on the side of the folks who want to continue the ban on gays and lesbians openly serving, I'd lock her up for the duration. She was literally laughed at during the proceedings, the room erupting at her lunacy, which included visions of rampant "lesbian assaults" and contorted gay sex on submarines if the ban was lifted. But she was ready for her closeup. Look at her ridiculous testimony (courtesy of HRC; Chris Johnson liveblogged it):

MN: Republican family values hypocrite Mark Olson - no shame

Look at the career aspirations of convicted GOP wife-beater Rep. Mark Olson -- he has quit the Minnesota House to run for state senator. Olson called his conviction for domestic assault (for shoving his wife to the ground several times) a "personal failure." He begged his House colleagues for forgiveness; no word on whether he apologized to his family.

Gradations of an anti-choice wingnut

I'm so tickled about McCain's inability to answer a basic question about Viagra vs. birth control pill, which is getting widespread coverage and is going to haunt him. In fact, it's so widespread that Bill O'Reilly decided he had to argue for the double standard on his show. In doing so, he's taking an enormous risk, because unfairness of it all is so evident that even his feeble attempts to defend it fall short, and he's reduced (well, he likes it, so not reduced) to basically mocking women for having sex while simultaneously arguing that straight men have an enshrined right to have it. His audience is pretty dumb, but even they might see the holes in his theory.
