Conservative Leaders Don't Want You To Even Look At Healthcare.gov

Despite the fact that conservatives often fancy themselves the kind of people who define political self-interest as strictly a cold, financial matter, the reality is that they're far better than liberals at exploiting things like social stigma, bigotry, taboo and other "irrational" emotions to point people in the direction they want them to go. You're really beginning to see that with the rollout of the ACA. While the ostensible arguments against it being levied by conservatives are financial, the emotional underpinnings are pure stigmatization. I was all about Brian Beutler's piece at Salon yesterday about "waiver mania", and I particularly liked this insight:

Are The Female Characters On True Detective Supposed To Be Invisible?

Alright, I finally cracked and watched True Detective. I blame all of you people---meaning anyone singing its praises before---for my reluctance to watch before. It has been treated by most fans and critics like a major league bummer show, the kind you choke down out of guilt and obligation, like Top of the Lake. By the time I'm done with a full day or week of reporting, often on stuff that is really a big time bummer, entertainment whose entire purpose is to make the viewer sad holds no interest for me. But True Detectives isn't actually bummer "entertainment". It's a Southern Gothic, and it's not about bumming you out so much at getting you to figuratively turn the page to find out what happens next. The two genres couldn't be more different, dammit. So I'm into it.

More Guns Means More, Not Fewer, Calls To The Police

Roy Edroso discovers a new level of self-delusion emerging from gun nuts, who are convincing themselves that they're somehow how less "dependent" on government because of their phallic death totems. They're all in a frenzy having to double down after a gun nut in Florida named Michael Dunn murdered a teenage boy named Jordan Davis for playing loud music, and then citing "stand your ground" in order to get away with it. (He was nonetheless convicted of three attempted murder charges, because even a bunch of racists on a Florida jury can't justify unloading into a car that's driving away as "self-defense".) That means worshipping and idolizing guns in increasingly comical ways. So David French painted this picture of gun nuts as these people who somehow live apart from the mechanisms of police and other emergency services, as independent operators.

Erick Erickson Demonstrates The Dangers Of Sexual Repression

I fully confess to having an endless fascination with the sexual hang-ups and weirdnesses that seem to fuel the conservative movement, particularly the religious right. Erick Erickson's latest emission is particularly delightful in this regard, and feels, I have to say, like a weird form of projection. Erickson claims the mainstream media would be up in arms about the latest non-scandal that the right has cooked up---basically, that the HHS is tweaking the rollout of Obamacare, as if no bureaucracy has ever engaged in troubleshooting a policy in the history of bureaucracies before---but really, it's an opportunity for him to accuse journalists and liberals of being perverts who have sex fantasies, something he has heard about but no doubt swears he does not have.

Obamacare Allows Workers To Tell Bosses To Shove Off; Conservatives Are Angry.

Roy Edroso of the Village Voice has a round-up of all the ugly and frequently dishonest right wing attacks on Obamacare after the Congressional Budget Office released a report showing that Americans would reduce their work hours by enough to equal 2.3 million full-time jobs because of it. After it became clear that they wouldn't get very far with the lie that these jobs would be "lost"---because the hours cut back would be workers choosing on their own to work part-time or retire early---conservatives switched their tune, painting Obamacare as a "handout" that discouraged people from an honest day's work. This was no surprise, of course. If there's one position that will always be consistent in conservatism, it's the position that holds that capitalists should be able to do anything in their power to undercut labor's bargaining power. Squeezing as much work out of people as humanly possible for the lowest cost possible is possible the first rule of conservative ideology. So of course they're against this. Being able to cut back at your crappy job where you're drastically underpaid to maximize your greedy boss's profits so you can do other things---include, perhaps, go to school or pick up freelance work so that you can get a better and better-paying job---runs against everything that the right holds dear. We're talking about people who resist even the tiniest raise of the minimum wage. This is no surprise.
