In The Court Of Public Opinion, Let's Try Preponderance Of Evidence As The Standard

The Woody Allen story has gotten under my skin, and it's not because I'm particularly interested in the debate over whether or not to "boycott" his movies, which is a discourse that is more about liberals feeling self-righteous and has little to do with actually preventing abuse or getting justice for victims. Nor do I think this is a story about Hollywood in particular, as the dynamic I'm seeing is actually prevalent in most communities. Stories like this are important because they give us an opportunity to work out how we believe is the best practices in reacting to allegations of sexual abuse or domestic violence, and therefore help shape how we handle it when it comes up in our own communities.

The Christian Right Loves A Bully

There's a strong tendency in the public discourse about bullying to assume that adults either are strongly against it or that they are, at worst, indifferent to it because they fail to take it seriously enough. There's very little discourse about how adults often encourage bullying and even benefit from it, probably in part because adults in authority at schools will adamantly deny the encouragement they offer bullies if confronted on it. But let's be clear: Teachers and other authority figures are often the instigators when it comes to bullying. The ACLU is suing a school district in Louisiana because the adults have deliberately employed bullying as a weapon to marginalize students who don't believe in Christianity. The plaintiff, Scott Lane, is suing because his stepson, who is Buddhist, has been subject to all sorts of abuse for not being a Christian, mostly at the hands of his teacher.

Obama Is The Anti-Christ Warm-up Act, Says Bill O'Reilly Guest

Holy crap, this might be a whole new level of the right wing just giving into their anger and panic over the fact that Americans were willing to elect a black Democrat as President twice in a row. Bill O'Reilly brought this religious crank, Robert Jeffress, on the basically argue that Obama is the opening act for the Anti-Christ. I mean, he clearly wants you to believe that Obama is basically the Anti-Christ, but he knows that argument sounds crazy. So he, uh, tries to dial it down by saying, no, he's just the warm-up act. Of course, that still means he believes that the Anti-Christ is coming and that Obama works directly for Satan, but in nutty Christian talk, saying Obama is merely a horseman of the apocalypse instead of the big boss is taken for moderation.

On MLK Day, It's Doubly Important To Keep Talking About Income Inequality

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and as such, it's incredibly important to discuss an issue that was at the top of MLK's priority list: Economic justice. In MLK's day, the big concern was that there were wide swaths of America that were shut out of a humble middle class lifestyle because they lived in chronic poverty. He would no doubt be appalled at how things have gotten worse in a lot of ways. Not only is chronic poverty still a problem for a lot of people, but the middle class that seemed much more stable in his day is falling apart, as the people at the top 1% of the income ladder are sucking up more and more of they nation's wealth for themselves. I recommend Paul Krugman's excellent dismantling of the conservative narrative that poverty is caused by "lifestyle", where he argues instead that poverty is caused by the same damn thing that is causing the middle class to struggle in a way that calls into question whether or not they are really "middle class" anymore.

Why Is OK Cupid A Stew Of Misogynist Harassment?

Atheist feminists Miri at Freethought Blogs and Heina at Skepchick both have excellent criticisms of the viral Reddit post where a guy created a fake dating profile and "proved" that women get a whole buttload of harassment on OK Cupid. Their point is that there's something deeply screwy about a situation where women can point out, again and again, how much harassment that they receive---even offer evidence of it!---but it's not "proved" until a man says it. It's part of a larger problem of how women's voices are devalued, something I learned at a young age when I realized that citing a male friend or writer who agreed with me when expressing an opinion, especially to another man, made it exponentially more likely that my opinion would be taken seriously instead of dismissed out of hand.
