Libertarian inadvertently argues for 90% marginal tax rate

Peter Thiel wrote this bizarre lament about how rich white men aren't "free" to deprive the rest of us of our basic rights a couple of weeks ago, but it's only now that it's getting linked all over the place. Once it was out, it was no wonder that it took off---Thiel is one of the co-founders of PayPal and a major investor in Facebook, and he's a complete wackaloon and apparently a misogynist besides. Which is to say, he's a libertarian. And his essay really drives home how much libertarians shouldn't own the word "liberty", because they are actually modern day feudalists who object to any government functions that don't involve taxing the middle class to create an army to ransack other nations and take their wealth.

SC's Jim DeMint hilariously tries to spin Specter defection as GOP win; Olympia Snowe in panic

I can't tell if it's pee-in-your-pants panic or a river of denial for the GOP in the wake of Arlen Specter's defection, but South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint's spin is so ridiculous - "Republicans are seeing across the country that the biggest tent of all is the Tent of Freedom” that CNN's Rick Sanchez actually says "What the hell does that mean?" Watch it:

Holy Shit

We're now at 60 Dems in the Senate (assuming Norm Coleman gives up before the heat death of the universe).

Thank you, Arlen Specter, you politically motivated hack of a sell-out. Thank you.

Counting down until someone claims that Democrats made swine flu up

The conservative attempts to politicize the swine flu have been the only funny thing about this pandemic that has killed over 100 people and threatens the globe. It's really shown that your average wingnut was one black President away from spinning straight from nutty to completely conspiracy theorist militia-starting bonkers. There is nothing that can't be turned into a political conspiracy about their own pet hate. Immigration nutters blame Mexico. People whose every waking moment is dedicated to hating latte-swilling liberals are trying to make this about Obama. Knowing as we do that conservatives are streamlined projection machines, we can learn something about all this paranoia.

Really? Get married at 20? Really?

Some days you get out of bed and one of the first things you read is a piece pressuring young women---and explicitly just women---to get married young, and you want to go right back to bed. Is this 2009? Is Mark Regnerus aware that women aren't legally considered chattel any more? Well, of course, and he's not having it.

If you hate it so much, why'd you come out, dudes?

This article about how Neko Case concerts are sometimes marred by sexist heckling is an interesting snapshot of an irritating phenomenon I've noticed. It tends to happen most when a band with a prominent female member or members have gotten popular enough that they start to attract male fans that don't usually listen to many female musicians. Which is to say that I've seen this happen at Sleater-Kinney, Sonic Youth, and the Donnas, but not so much with bands that have a smaller audience. Now Neko Case is getting it.

The Religious Right: bearing false witness over and over about hate crimes legislation

Religious Right leaders’ portrayal of the hate crimes bill as an attack on religious liberty is false; it reflects a larger political strategy to portray equality advocates as enemies of faith and freedom.

Sunday Sermon: Does morality come from in or outside?

One of the long-standing claims of pro-religionists is that without religion, there is no morality. It's a startling claim, for a couple of reasons. The first is that they're essentially saying that you must lie to people about a god watching in order to get them to behave, which already puts the moral system on the shaky ground of being immoral in and of itself. It's a claim that strikes atheists and liberal religious types as unlikely, because we experience morality as coming primarily from the inside. You don't strike other people when angry, even when you could get away with it, because hitting is wrong and disturbs you.
