President Donald Trump’s endorsement of a scandal-plagued would-be senator has earned him a cold shoulder from the Republican Party, according to a new report.
Conservative journalist David Drucker of The Dispatch said Thursday that Trump and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton should not expect to see any GOP cash flowing into the state, even if Paxton is struggling to claim Sen. John Cornyn's (R) seat.
“Republicans made it very clear to me, both operatives and otherwise, that they weren't going to spend a dime on this state,” Drucker reported.
“They wanted John Cornyn because, as bad as this cycle is, guys, as bad as it is for Republicans, if John Cornyn is the nominee, the race might be close, but it wouldn't be in doubt.”
Drucker told MS NOW “Morning Joe" hosts Jonathan Lemire and Willie Geist that Paxton’s name on the Republican ticket has created an unbridgeable schism within the party.
If Trump wants Paxton to win, he’ll have to put his own money where his mouth is, Republicans told Trump.
“What they told the president is, 'You wanted Ken Paxton — You broke it, you bought it,” Drucker said. “They're like, 'You can spend.'"
Drucker called Trump's failure to spend big on Paxton as a missed opportunity.
"They've wasted a summer," he said. "The polling looks difficult for Ken Paxton."
