Democrats are still riding high on Tuesday night’s Blue Wave, which was far stronger than anyone expected. Polls indicated Democrats would take back the House, and a Senate majority was within reach, but no one thought it was a lock.
And then we had a full congressional flip to Blue before 11 pm on the East Coast, an hour before I took over for three hours of Election Night coverage on SiriusXM Progress. The adrenaline rush, paired with the late-night caffeine, definitely kept me going. Callers were relieved, and it felt as if the entire country exhaled with relief after delivering such a glaringly obvious referendum against Trump.
The American people voted primarily for affordability, and we also want to see accountability now that it’s achievable. And it’s coming for Trump as he and his remaining loyalists are circling their wagons ahead of impending investigations and potential impeachments.
Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), who’s one of my Senators and is going to be the Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, went viral for tweeting one simple word once the Senate victory was declared for Democrats.
“Sen. Chutzpah,” as I like to call him, also released a statement regarding the Senate Finance Committee’s agenda once the next Congress is sworn in.
“For the last two years, Republicans have used the Finance Committee to execute and defend the most craven parts of Trump’s agenda: ripping health insurance away from millions, driving up costs with tariffs, covering up Epstein’s financial records, and letting Trump treat the Treasury Department like his personal piggy bank. The American people who are struggling to afford gas, health care, and groceries overwhelmingly voted for change.
“Trump and Republicans have been running a smash-and-grab job on the American people. Under my leadership, the top priorities of the Finance Committee will be affordability for us, accountability for them.”
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) shared a similar vibe on his social media accounts as well.
Republicans are in panic mode as resignations and shuffles come for the White House and the Department of Justice. Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is among the first to go, only to be replaced by Kapo Nosferatu Stephen Miller, who just might be the most dangerous person to ever have this kind of access to the President of the United States. Democrats who are threatening to impeach Pete Hegseth first would be wise to subpoena Miller as soon as possible.
I just can’t help but imagine Trump barricading himself inside the Oval Office with him and the nuclear football. Miller is the one who ordered the separation of breastfeeding babies from their mothers at the borders, so the sooner Democrats can find a way to imprison him (along with Jared Kushner), the better.
Meanwhile, election-denying Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who gutted the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, has resigned from her position, as has Trump DOJ appointee Jason Reding Quinones, who led the manufactured “grand conspiracy” probe of Trump’s “enemies.” It’s also rumored that Secretary of State Marco “Big Shoes He’ll Never Fill” Rubio is considering resigning, while current Speaker Mike “Jesus Freak” Johnson (R-LA) has said he won’t seek a leadership role for the new Republican minority.
Guess who wants that gig? Subpoena-ducking Rep. Jim “Gym” Jordan (R-OH), who casually ignored federal law when he refused to comply when the now-defunct January 6th House Select Committee ordered him to appear in May 2022. The same Jim Jordan who famously looked the other way for years while student athletes were being sexually assaulted at Ohio State wants to be the Minority Leader, and the remaining Trumpsimps in the House will most likely just let him have it, because they have no real fight left in them.
Rearranging the deck chairs on the Trumptanic won’t help anyone stay afloat. Once Democrats are finally able to release the fully unredacted Epstein Files, what will the remaining Trump loyalists and MAGA cultists do? They’ve learned how to avoid the most damaging truths about Trump for this long, but investigations, hearings, and possible trials will be harder to ignore. They’re currently whining on social media like all sore losers do, leaning heavily into the false bravado of the “Trump is STILL your President!” line like the whiners they are. Even though you can tell they’re scared of what’s to come once the next Congress is sworn in, it’s worth considering what they might do once the reality of the situation finally sets in.
It’s more likely that he’ll be a cautionary tale, like Hitler, so that those people hopefully won’t repeat this history. We’re coming out of a very dark time in our country, and one thing that brings me hope is that there won’t ever be another polarizing figurehead in the Republican Party who rises like a cult leader instead of a patriotic public servant.
What happens in a post-Trump America remains to be seen, but what the fractured MAGA cult and the shattered GOP do next needs to be watched closely. They lost badly in districts where Trump had triumphed only two years ago and are now facing dire consequences as a result of the upcoming Committee investigations.
Trump is at his most dangerous when he’s cornered, and now he’s the lamest duck in American history. He’s going to close ranks as tightly as possible, and while he may call himself “Mr. Veto,” refusing to sign legislation that would benefit the American people would only continue to hurt Republicans. It's also possible that Congress can override a presidential veto, which Trump would know if he had any clue about how our government works.
MAGA was promised so much winning, but has only been handed L’s in return for their loyalty. Those who insist on hanging on will only get more misery, while those of us who’ve been ready for this moment for more than a decade will (hopefully) finally get some justice.
