President Donald Trump has bragged that he’s sharper than ever. His niece, clinical psychologist Mary Trump, says his own words suggest otherwise.
In the latest installment of her weekly “Trump Trolls Trump” series, Mary Trump played back a string of her uncle’s public remarks, and some of them wander badly.
Here is how Trump talked about war while campaigning in 2024:
“I’m the one that kept us out of war. I’m the only president that didn’t start a war. I didn’t start a war. Started no war.”
He kept going in the same vein, repeating himself several more times.
More than six months into Trump’s war with Iran, Mary Trump wasn’t impressed.
“Really? Threatening genocide is not going to keep us out of wars,” she wrote.
When an interviewer asked Trump to grade his handling of the economy, he gave himself an “A plus” before escalating.
“Yeah. A plus, plus, plus, plus, plus,” he said.
“Well, it makes sense that he would give himself a grade that doesn’t exist,” Mary Trump wrote.
Trump has also insisted that he has never been more alert than he is now.
“Right now, I think I’m sharper than I was 25 years ago,” he said. “You’ll never see me sleeping in front of camera.”
Mary Trump, who has a doctorate in clinical psychology and wrote a bestselling book about her family, said that boast doesn’t hold up.
“I have never seen a sleepier person,” she wrote. “That hypersomnia is not a good thing.”
She called her uncle “a master of projection” and said that when he attacks others for dozing off, “clearly” he’s “talking about himself.”
“I have never met such a hypersomnolent person in my life,” she wrote. “Although to be fair, sleepy Donald is my favorite mode of Donald.”
Trump has repeatedly been photographed appearing to nod off at public events this year, fueling questions about his stamina as he approaches 81.
