'The beginning of American state terror' is here: historian

A historian who has extensively studied the rise of fascism warned that president Donald Trump had crossed a dangerous line.

The president met Monday in the Oval Office with El Salvador president Niyab Bukele, and both leaders claimed to be powerless to bring back a Maryland father who had been mistakenly deported to a prison in that country, but Trump also asked him to build even more prisons to house "homegrown" American criminals, all of which alarmed historian Timothy Snyder.

Casey DeSantis faces investigation -- from a Florida Republican

A Republican state lawmaker in Florida is moving to subpoena Gov. Ron DeSantis' attorney general over his purported role in a scheme to steer dark money into the Hope Florida Foundation, a charity run by the governor's wife, reported the Tampa Bay Times this week.

"Rep. Alex Andrade told the Times/Herald Monday night that he decided to issue a subpoena to the state’s top prosecutor after speaking to the leaders of two dark money groups that received $5 million grants from the foundation last year," reported Alexandra Glorioso and Lawrence Mower. Per Andrade, one of those leaders said AG James Uthmeier "directed her to ask the foundation for the grant, and the other didn’t deny it ... Both groups subsequently gave millions to a political committee controlled by Uthmeier to help fight a recreational marijuana amendment."

'We're living through hell' and 'it's all downhill from here': Trump-covering reporter

Asawin Suebsaeng, a journalist who has covered President Donald Trump for years for both The Daily Beast and Rolling Stone, has a grim outlook in a new interview with The New Republic about what the administration's mass deportation policies portend for the future.

Trump made it clear this week, during a White House visit with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, that he has no intention of lifting a finger to aid the return of Maryland father Kilmar Abrego Garcia after he was accidentally shipped to an infamous Salvadoran prison despite legal protection from being deported to that country — even though the Supreme Court unanimously upheld a lower court order for him to "facilitate" Garcia's return. Indeed, the administration is doubling down on it, calling him a criminal gang member even though he has never been convicted of any crime, gang-related or otherwise.
