'Most shocking data I've seen': CNN analyst stunned by GOP gain on key voter question

CNN's Harry Enten flagged some "shocking" poll data showing Democrats and Republicans are neck and neck in a key metric.

Democrats have long enjoyed an advantage when voters are asked which party cares about the needs of people like them, but Enten told "CNN News Central" that has seemingly evaporated even as president Donald Trump's trade war threatens to increase prices on everything from food to automobiles.

'Living under dictatorship': Historian says Fox News just hit 'outright North Korean' low

Vanderbilt University historian Nicole Hemmer believes that Fox News has hit a new low in its coverage of President Donald Trump's global trade war.

In an interview with The New Republic's Greg Sargent, Hemmer marvels at the way Fox News spun Trump backing off his most extreme tariffs as a four-dimensional chess move rather than a panic move that came in reaction to turmoil in bond markets.

'That game is over': Ex-senator claims Supreme Court just put Trump's admin on notice

According to former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) the Supreme Court late Thursday left no doubt that won't give Donald Trump's administration a free pass to snatch people off the street and ship them out of the country without due process.

During an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," the blunt-speaking former lawmaker stated the court's rebuke, with regard to the arrest and shipping of 29-year-old Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to a prison in El Salvador, has put Trump's DOJ on notice.

Speaking with co-host Joe Scarborough, McCaskill explained, "I think [Chief Justice John] Roberts wanted a 9-0; I think he wanted everybody in the boat and so they kind of played games with the semantics of this, this 'effectuate' versus 'facilitate.'"

"The bottom line is this Supreme Court has unanimously told Donald Trump, you can't race to the airport with a bunch of people and get them out of the country and then claim you can do nothing about it," she continued. "That no longer can happen, that game is over, and that's really the takeaway here."

She then added, "This and we had a Trump judge yesterday also basically citing the Supreme Court saying you've got to give notice, you've got to have a hearing and that's really what I think we need in this country is the court to unanimously, even if the language was a little hinky, and they're going to have to go back and figure out the difference."

"It's still is very strong that our Supreme Court unanimously said, 'No, Donald Trump. You can't do this, not in the United States of America,'" she concluded.

'Gloves are off': CNN reporter says China's new response is 'almost making fun' of Trump

Chinese leader Xi Jinping declared his nation was "not afraid" of the trade war president Donald Trump was waging and raised its tariffs on U.S. imports to 125 percent, and CNN's Marc Stewart said China's comments seemed to be "making fun" of the American leader.

Trump has raised tariffs on China to 145 percent, but China has indicated it won't go higher than 125 percent, saying it would be pointless to escalate any further, and the international correspondent told "CNN News Central" that Xi's first public remarks on the trade war stood out as particularly provocative.

'Frustrating': CDC lays off all cruise ship inspectors as virus surges

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laid off all its cruise ship inspectors, which would severely damage efforts to prevent outbreaks on board.

A smaller group of 12 U.S. Public Health Service officers will remain on duty, but CDC officials say they're baffled by the cuts because the inspectors are funded through fees paid by cruise ship companies and not taxpayer dollars, reported CBS News.

'A lot of loopholes' in Supreme Court Trump smack-down: legal expert

Reacting to the Supreme Court's stunning ruling that Donald Trump's administration must "facilitate" the return of a Maryland father who was mistakenly shipped off to a prison in El Salvador, MSNBC legal analyst Danny Cevallos stated the devil is in the details.

Speaking with "Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough, the attorney admitted he was just as surprised as anyone that the conservative-leaning court ruled unanimously in favor of the family of 29-year-old Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, but also pointed out that the ruling left some "wiggle room" for the anti-immigrant Trump DOJ.

'What is this, group therapy?' MSNBC's Maddow mocks Supreme Court's 'squishy' ruling

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow tore into the Supreme Court on her show late Thursday over its confusing — and tepid — order that the Trump administration try to "facilitate" a wrongfully deported migrant's return to the United States.

The high court ruled that the Trump administration must take steps to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man that the Trump administration admitted it mistakenly deported to El Salvador. But the court stopped short of forcing the government to ensure Abrego Garcia is returned to the U.S.

'That's nuts': Ex-Bush official smacks down Trump DOJ's wild response to Supreme Court

A former official in George W. Bush's administration knocked the Justice Department over its response to a Supreme Court ruling that ordered the Trump administration to "facilitate" the return of a migrant who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador.

The conservative-leaning high court ruled that a lower court correctly ordered the Trump administration to "facilitate" Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release from custody from a notoriously brutal Salvadoran megaprison and to "ensure that his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent to El Salvador."

'Notable': Lawmaker's admission of 'regret' flagged during CNN town hall

CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins flagged a "notable" response from a Connecticut Democrat, who acknowledged at a televised town hall Thursday night that she regretted voting in favor of the Laken Riley Act.

President Donald Trump signed the act into law in late January, mandating that certain noncitizens be held without bail if they're accused of specific crimes, including theft, burglary, shoplifting, assaulting a police officer, or crimes causing death or serious bodily injury. The law applies even if charges are later dropped and includes people authorized to be in the United States, such as asylum seekers and those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, or Temporary Protected Status. Minors are not exempt.
