Boeing leaders address airplane quality crisis and hit to reputation

Last year ended better for Boeing than Wall Street had projected, yet when the earnings details were released Wednesday, the healthy cash flow didn't seem to matter much now. "Boeing's world changed on January 5th when the Alaska Airlines door blew off, and so anything before that date is now of less relevance," financial analyst Rob Stallard of Vertical Research wrote a note to investors. Boeing lost $2.2 billion in 2023, the fifth loss in five bad years, but the best result since 2019. A few weeks ago, that might have been taken as a sign that in 2024 Boeing might finally make it back into t......

Secretary of State Antony Blinken forced to change planes after Boeing malfunction

Secretary of State Antony Blinken was briefly left stranded in Switzerland on Wednesday after the Boeing plane intended to fly him back to the United States suffered a critical failure caused by an oxygen leak, according to multiple reports. Blinken had only just boarded the modified Boeing 737 jet in Zurich when the issue became apparent, CNN reported. The aircraft — a military version of the Boeing 737 Next Generation — was ultimately deemed unsafe, and passengers were forced to deplane. Another smaller plane was chartered for the secretary. Others traveling with Blinken, including members o......

USS Mobile Bay, a major player during Operation Desert Storm, will be decommissioned next week in San Diego

The cruiser USS Mobile Bay, which launched 22 Tomahawk cruise missiles during Operation Desert Storm and helped carry people to safety when Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines, will be decommissioned in San Diego on Aug. 10, ending the service life of one of the oldest ships in the Navy. Mobile Bay will become the latest Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser to be sidelined by the Navy, which is phasing out the Cold War-era vessels in favor of the newer Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The cruisers were designed for a 35-year service life. Mobile Bay was commissioned 36 years ago and ini......

British scientists tracking two enormous icebergs larger than London

British scientists are tracking two enormous icebergs that broke off from Antarctica and could intrude on shipping lanes. The Royal Research Ship Discovery inspected the latter berg as it entered the southern Atlantic Ocean. “It was directly in our path as we sailed home so we took 24 hours out to go around it,” British oceanographer Geraint Tarlingtold the BBC. It’s slowly approaching the Falkland Islands, which are a British territory. Researchers’ ......

Uncontrolled rocket debris expected to hit Earth soon. Could it land in the US?

Another large Chinese rocket body is falling uncontrollably toward Earth, U.S. space experts said, and is expected to hit soon. The Long March 5B rocket was launched in China on July 24 to deliver a module to China’s Space Station, according to a news release from the Aerospace Corporation, a nonprofit research center funded by the U.S. government. Now, the rocket body is making an uncontrolled reentry in Earth’s atmosphere, the release said. Predicting a time and location of reentry is difficult, experts of the Aerospace Corporation said in a news conference this week. The most recent predict......
