Senate Republicans block rape and incest exceptions for Missouri abortion ban

Despite recent blowups among Republicans in the Missouri Senate, the majority party remained unified Wednesday to block a Democratic effort to legalize abortion in cases of rape or incest. After Republicans opened debate on a plan to ban Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood, Democrats responded with amendments aimed at loosening Missouri's near-total abortion ban. Missouri since June 2022 has only allowed abortions in medical emergencies. While the Democratic amendments weren't likely to pass, the minority party used the opportunity to showcase and document Republican support for what Democr......

Top FL lawmakers won't back near-total abortion ban or end to universal voting by mail

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s House and Senate leaders are throwing cold water on headline-grabbing bills that would eliminate no-excuse mail voting and impose a near-total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape and incest. The proposals are unlikely to succeed during the 60-day session that started Tuesday without their support. House Speaker Paul Renner and Senate President Kathleen Passidomo said they don’t want to significantly scale back mail-in voting or further restrict abortion. “We have a lot of elderly people who like the vote-by-mail process,” said Passidomo, R-Naples. A bill ( SB 1752)......

Republican Kehoe open to amending Missouri abortion ban to add exceptions if elected governor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe is open to amending the state’s near-total abortion ban to include exceptions for rape and incest if elected governor in 2024. “As governor and the father of three daughters, Kehoe would consider approving legislation brought forward by the General Assembly that contains exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother,” Derek Coats, the Republican’s campaign manager, said in an email to The Kansas City Star this week. Kehoe’s willingness to add exceptions to the law comes as House Minority Leader Crystal Quade, a Springfield Democrat, has emb......

Kansas faces OB-GYN shortage. Providers warn new laws could further strain maternity care

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jessica Babler, a nursing student at Research College of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri, is tired of being vilified for wanting to provide abortions, which she views as health care, to her patients. Babler hopes to be an OB-GYN nurse and practice in Kansas, but she said the Kansas Legislature’s continued efforts to limit abortion — even after Kansans overwhelmingly rejected a constitutional amendment which would have restricted or banned abortion in 2022 — have caused her to reconsider where she wants to practice. For Babler, a state’s laws on abortion, which will decide w......

Missouri voters likely to reinstate abortion rights if given the chance, Republicans say

As Missouri girds for an anticipated fight at the ballot box next year over an amendment overturning its near-total abortion ban, some Republicans have begun saying they expect a majority of voters to support restoring access to the procedure. The stark admissions have also been accompanied by intense efforts to make it harder for Missourians to amend the state constitution – an extraordinary acknowledgment that the Republican-controlled General Assembly must erode direct democracy in the state or risk decades of anti-abortion policy unraveling in a single election. “I think we all believe tha......

Kansas lawmakers advance unproven abortion pill ‘reversal’ legislation to Kelly’s desk

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas lawmakers approved a policy early Friday morning requiring abortion providers and pharmacists to inform patients of an unproven treatment to “reverse” mifepristone, the first drug used in a medication abortion. It was one of several measures on abortion the Republican-controlled Legislature sent to Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s desk less than a year after Kansas voters overwhelmingly supported preserving the state constitutional protection for abortion. The abortion pill reversal bill also included a policy to redefine abortion in statute to exclude contraceptives, ectopi......
