Brandeis Center files federal discrimination complaint against Penn over handling of antisemitism

PHILADELPHIA — A nonprofit aimed at advancing civil and human rights of Jewish people has filed a federal complaint against the University of Pennsylvania, saying it failed to address harassment and discrimination against its students. The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law also this week filed a separate Title IV complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights against Wellesley College. As part of its mission of advocacy, research and education, the center has filed complaints on behalf of students at universities, including the University of Vermont ......

Missouri’s ban on transgender care for minors faces lawsuit from ACLU, Lambda Legal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The ACLU of Missouri and the national LGBTQ civil rights law firm Lambda Legal sued Tuesday to stop Missouri’s new restrictions on gender-affirming care for transgender youth from going into effect next month. The state lawsuit, filed in Cole County Circuit Court, seeks to prevent implementation of SB 49, which the Republican-controlled General Assembly passed and Gov. Mike Parson signed into law this spring. The suit is being brought on behalf of three families of trans youth, medical providers and national LGBTQ advocacy organizations. The law, which is set to take effect ......

John Fetterman’s Pa. Senate campaign is suing to have undated and misdated ballots counted

PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman’s campaign for U.S. Senate has joined the legal fight over whether mail ballots with no date or the incorrect date should be counted in Tuesday’s election. The Democratic campaign sued state elections officials Monday asking a federal judge to order that all mail ballots be counted regardless of what date, if any, voters wrote on the outside of the envelope. State law requires that voters write a date on the outer envelope when returning their mail ballots, and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled last week that undated and wrongly dated mail......

The Pa. Supreme Court issues a second order on mail ballot dates as the legal fight continues

PHILADELPHIA — The scramble to figure out which Pennsylvania mail ballots to count and reject based on handwritten dates continued Saturday. A state Supreme Court order Tuesday — that many had earlier hoped would settle the matter for this election — directed counties to reject mail ballots missing those dates as well as those where the voter put a wrong date on their ballot. But the decision has since stirred uncertainty among elections administrators over what exactly constitutes an incorrect date and drawn new litigation from advocates who say rejecting ballots over what amounts to a mistak......

Pa. Supreme Court orders counties to set aside undated and wrongly dated mail ballots and not count them

PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania counties must segregate and not count mail ballots with missing or incorrect dates, the state Supreme Court said Tuesday, in a ruling that could affect thousands of votes in November’s midterm elections. “The Pennsylvania county boards of elections are hereby ordered to refrain from counting any absentee and mail-in ballots received for the November 8, 2022 general election that are contained in undated or incorrectly dated outer envelopes,” the court said in its order Tuesday afternoon. The justices said they were deadlocked, 3-3, on whether rejecting undated and w......

Christian health care group challenges state's anti-discrimination law after recent ruling

A Christian health care organization is claiming a new interpretation of Michigan's anti-discrimination law as it relates to sexual orientation and gender identity "poses an imminent threat" to the group's constitutional rights to freedom of religion, religious exercise, speech and assembly. Christian Healthcare Centers filed a lawsuit Monday against the state of Michigan, arguing the state's law violates due process because it imposes "vague standards" where the government is given "unbridled discretion" to censor speech. The Grand Rapids, Michigan-area nonprofit organization says it serves e......
