A leader in U.S. seaweed farming preaches, teaches and builds a wider network

Branford (United States) (AFP) - Bren Smith and his GreenWave organization are helping lay the foundations for a generation of seaweed-growing farmers in the United States, while working to build a network of producers and buyers. Seen from a boat, GreenWave's farm seems unimpressive -- little more than lines of white and black buoys, a few hundred yards (meters) off the Connecticut coast. But beneath the dark Atlantic waters, suspended from ropes tied between the buoys around six feet (two meters) down, seaweed in varying shades of brown undulates.  GreenWave, which uses no pesticides or herb......

Extreme heat sparks wildfires, health warnings

Rome (AFP) - Extreme heat was forecast across the globe on Wednesday, as wildfires raged and health warnings were in place in parts of Asia, Europe and North America. Firefighters battled blazes in parts of Greece and the Canary Islands while Spain issued heat alerts and some children in Italy's Sardinia were told to stay away from sports. From California to China, authorities warned of the health dangers brought by searing temperatures, urging people to drink water and shelter from the sun.  "You can't be in the street, it's horrible," said Lidia Rodriguez, 27, in Madrid. Temperature records ......

Record heatwaves sweep the world, from US to Europe and Asia

Rome (AFP) - Tens of millions of people were battling dangerously high temperatures around the world on Sunday as record heat forecasts hung over parts of the United States, Europe and Asia, in the latest example of the threat from global warming. A powerful heatwave stretching from California to Texas was expected to peak, according to the US National Weather Service, which warned of an "extremely hot and dangerous weekend". Daytime highs were forecast to range between 10 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit above normal in the west. Arizona's state capital Phoenix recorded 16 straight days above 109F (......

Alligator captured in New York park, possibly 'cold shocked'

New York (AFP) - A "very lethargic" alligator was captured in a New York park, city officials said Monday, likely released by its owner far away from the species' warmer habitat in the southeast United States. The reptile was spotted Sunday morning in Prospect Park, a favorite place for Brooklyn residents to picnic and stroll with their pets, especially when winter temperatures are in the 50s Fahrenheit (10-15 Celsius) like over the holiday weekend. Rangers captured the four-foot-long (1.2 meters) alligator, which was "found very lethargic and possibly cold shocked," New York City Parks said i......

Macron caps US state visit with New Orleans trip

New Orleans (AFP) - President Emmanuel Macron arrived on Friday in New Orleans, a city emblematic of historic Franco-American ties, to promote the French language and conclude his three-day state visit to the United States. The day after a lavish reception at the White House that sealed the "friendship" of the French president with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, he landed in the Louisiana city for a brief stop. After a colorful welcome by a jazz band on the tarmac at the airport, Macron and his wife, Brigitte, walked through the streets of the city's lively French Quarter. Removing his jacket,......

Farmers in US Midwest struggle amid prolonged drought

New York (AFP) - Months without rain have left farmers across the vast US Midwest, part of the country's essential "breadbasket," seeing crop yields in freefall, with some fields too damaged to harvest. At the 4,000-acre (1,600-hectare) Tucker Farms in Venango, Nebraska, "we were only able to harvest... around 500" acres, most of it wheat, said Rachel Tucker. Much of the rest had shriveled up under a relentlessly hot sun. The drought has attracted grasshoppers, which threatened the flowers the Tuckers also grow -- until they brought in praying mantises to control the winged pests. If the Ameri......
