Bamboo Review: The Eliminationists

Bamboo Review: The Eliminationists

I finished David Neiwert's new book The Eliminationists: How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right right before I left for New York, and now I'm back and have some time to really review it. I did an interview with David on RH Reality Check a couple of weeks ago, and it was really interesting. We talked a lot about the current right wing movement's tendency towards eliminationist rhetoric, and how it's resulted in a number of murders and terrorist threats since the Obama election. For a podcast about reproductive rights, and a short interview, that's about as much as we could cover. Obviously, eliminationism is a major issue with reproductive rights, since encouraging their followers to dehumanize and murder providers has been a part of the anti-choice movement for a long time now. But the book covers a lot more territory, looking at fascism and social movements like it, and spelling out a history of American eliminationism.

Reading David Neiwert's further take down of Jonah Goldberg's drivel, and comically horrified to discover that Goldberg has the absolute gall to consider Neiwert an "ankle-biter" I figured I'd share with him what real "ankle-biting" looks like. Jonah, a reasoned and thorough destruction of your entire thesis is less "ankle-biting" and more "head-lopping-off." Ankle-biting is more like going into a bookstore and redistributing copies of your pamphlet into much more appropriate - or at least fitting - sections of the establishment. image

Glenn Beck: kick California out of the U.S.

Glenn Beck: kick California out of the U.S.

Wow. Now that this turd has been unleashed from Headline News and jumped to Faux News, he's really gone over the deep end -- California is polluting the rest of the union with its wayward leftist ways (hey, what about Prop 8!?), so Glenn Beck's ready to boot the U.S. down to 49 states to save the family and the right to destroy the environment. David Neiwert @ Crooks & Liars has the video.

Palin's wingnut carnival

Palin's wingnut carnival

David Neiwert has a must-read blog post up now about his interview with John Stein, who she defeated in a 1996 election to be Wasilla mayor. Stein was the incumbent, and while it seems like the race for small town mayor shouldn't be that big a deal, Stein describes a campaign that was more of a referendum on all sorts of right wing bugaboos and obsessions. Gun control and abortion were major issues, even though small town mayors have no ability to affect these issues in any substantial way. Palin rode to victory by playing kissy-face with the black helicopter nuts and the worst sort of Bible-thumpers, who ran a whisper campaign that included rumors that Stein is Jewish. (He's Lutheran.)
