Todd Blanche creeping 'inexorably' toward contempt in Epstein case: legal expert

Attorney General Todd Blanche's Justice Department keeps stiffing a federal judge over the Epstein files, and a legal expert sees where the road ends.

Lawyer and analyst Michael Popok said in Saturday's episode of his podcast "The Intersection" that the DOJ is "moving ever so inexorably towards contempt" in Katie Phang's lawsuit against Blanche after the department blew yet another court deadline.

"I'm waiting any moment now for...a very unhappy Judge Sullivan to throw the book again at the Department of Justice," Popok said, referring to U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan, who's presiding over the case....

Todd Blanche in 'flop sweat' to save job as Trump revenge probe stalls: legal analyst

Attorney General Todd Blanche looks anxious pushing President Donald Trump's revenge investigation that has little to do with justice, an analyst wrote.

In a Saturday piece for her emptywheel blog, legal analyst Marcy Wheeler argued that Blanche is steering the so-called "grand conspiracy" investigation to protect his own position, pointing to his "flopsweat efforts to deliver on Trump's demands for revenge."

Wheeler built her argument around a New York Times report on the turmoil inside the probe, including a bitter clash between Blanche and Joe diGenova, the veteran Republican lawyer who quit the investigation amid the dispute....

Trump foes gearing up to stack evidence against his allies’ ‘sleazy’ deals: legal expert

A prominent lawyer and Trump critic says former prosecutors are laying groundwork for a reckoning President Donald Trump's Justice Department won't deliver.

George Conway told host Molly Jong-Fast on Friday's episode of "Fast Politics" that private groups of former prosecutors and investigators are organizing to assemble case files on corruption tied to Trump's orbit, giving future prosecutors a head start once the Justice Department is rebuilt.

"I know that there's somebody, there are people trying to form groups or organizations that are gonna get together," Conway said. "These are private groups that are gonna get together, professional ex-prosecutors and investigators."...

Trump’s ‘risky’ motive to shield Kimberly Guilfoyle laid bare by ex-prosecutor

A former federal prosecutor laid out why President Donald Trump has every reason to protect Kimberly Guilfoyle after explosive new reporting on her finances.

Andrew Weissmann, a former federal prosecutor, told host Sarah Longwell on Thursday's episode of "The Illegal News" that turning on Guilfoyle would be "too risky" for the president. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer," he said.

Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece and Donald Trump Jr.'s former fiancée, is facing scrutiny after The Wall Street Journal reported on texts in which she sought $100,000 from a donor to cover her American Express debt. ...

Trump civil rights chief’s ‘best and brightest’ boast crumbles hire by hire: legal expert

A former prosecutor ripped apart the Trump Justice Department's claim that its new civil rights lawyers rank among the nation's finest.

Lawyer and journalist Katie Phang, a former Miami-Dade prosecutor, picked through the records of new hires in the DOJ's Civil Rights Division on Wednesday's episode of "The Katie Phang Show," drawing on a New York Times report. The division is run by Harmeet Dhillon, President Donald Trump's pick to lead it.

Phang first played a June clip of Dhillon addressing the division’s staffing crunch. “Three-quarters of the lawyers in the department quit,” Dhillon said. “We’ve now hired back over 100 lawyers... I am proud to say that I’ve attracted the best and brightest to the Civil Rights Division.”...

Todd Blanche torched by legal experts for unraveling his own 'meritless' judges case

Todd Blanche torched by legal experts for unraveling his own 'meritless' judges case

Attorney General Todd Blanche's Justice Department undermined its own misconduct complaint against a slew of outspoken federal judges, legal experts argued.

The critique came in a Saturday editorial published by The Contrarian and co-written by lawyer and publisher Norm Eisen, retired U.S. District Judge Nancy Gertner, University of Minnesota law professor Richard Painter, and lawyer and legal scholar Matthew Seligman.

On Wednesday, Blanche filed a judicial misconduct complaint targeting almost every active federal judge in Minnesota after several of them spoke publicly about the strain an immigration enforcement surge put on their courthouse last winter. The authors noted that during that period, federal officials repeatedly ignored court orders and judges received threats....
