Commute no more: US employees embrace telework

Washington (AFP) - Commuting to and from the office five times a week? "It's just not what I want for my life," said Claire, a consultant in her thirties living in Washington.  Like Claire, millions of employees across the United States have grown fond of telework since the Covid-19 lockdown and now companies are struggling to bring them back to the office. Before Covid-19, Americans workers had grown used to less-than-friendly job conditions, such as short vacations and little or no maternity leave, but the experience of working from home left them wanting more.  "All of these practices that ......

The 10 best U.S. cities for high-paying jobs

By Brian O'Connell You can find high-paying jobs if you know where to look. With talk of a recession looming and good jobs harder to come by in select industries like technology and finance, it’s not outlandish to consider moving to a new city for better opportunities. In addition to higher pay, job seekers are increasingly on the hunt for flexible or hybrid work options and a greater sense of work-life balance. But some people can be limited by the place they live. When local jobs are scarce, you may find yourself jumping on an opportunity that isn't a good fit, locking you into an unfulfilli......

US hiring slows sharply in August, joblessness rises

Washington (AFP) - American employers slowed the pace of hiring in August after the surprising surge in the prior month and the jobless rate edged up, according to government data released Friday, which could offer the central bank some relief that its inflation-fighting efforts are working. The Federal Reserve is paying close attention to the progression of the hot job market, looking for signs of easing as it tries to cool the economy with steep interest rate hikes to tamp down inflation which has reached a 40-year high. While the data showed wages continued to rise, the unemployment rate ti......

'Now Hiring': US employers struggle to find enough workers

Washington (AFP) - Salespeople, food servers, postal workers --  "Help Wanted" ads are proliferating across the United States, as companies struggle to deal with a worker shortage caused by the pandemic, a rash of early retirements and restrictive immigration laws. More than 10 million openings went unfilled in June, according to government data, while fewer than six million people were seeking work, even as employers desperately try to boost hiring amid a frenzy of consumer spending. "We have a  lot of  jobs, but  not enough workers to fill them," the US Chamber of Commerce, which represents ......

US sees big job gains in June, fueling inflation worries

Washington (AFP) - The US economy added far more jobs than expected in June and wages rose, according to government data released Friday which could fuel fears about accelerating inflation. There were 372,000 new positions added in the month, nearly 100,000 more than economists forecast, and the unemployment rate held steady at 3.6 percent, the Labor Department reported. Average hourly earnings rose to cement a 5.1 percent increase over the past 12 months, the report said, while the share of adults in the labor force was little changed. The data will provide little comfort to the Federal Reser......

Applebees franchise executive is happy about higher gas prices

By Tom Bemis Says in leaked email that they will make it easier to hire desperate paycheck-to-paycheck employees at lower wages. An executive at a company that operates Applebee’s and Taco Bell franchises in several states has reportedly sent an email gloating that higher gas prices will make it easier to pressure potential employees to accept lower wages. The email, posted on a Reddit sub-channel this week, outlined a theory that higher gas prices would make potential employees more desperate for work and therefore more willing to accept lower pay. “Most of our employee base and potential emp......
