NRA no longer 'human rights group' on Google

NRA no longer 'human rights group' on Google

Google no longer lists the National Rifle Association as a "human rights group" following a Raw Story article last week that highlighted Google's own search description of the gun rights organization.

Google did not return Raw Story requests for comments about the change, which affects the NRA's prominently placed "knowledge panel" — a Google-generated box containing descriptive and statistical information that appears when someone searches for the group.

"Human rights group” has been listed immediately below the NRA’s name and next to the organization’s logo....

Violent FBI informant active in extremist groups should get up to 30 months in prison: government

The government is seeking a sentence of 24- to 30 months in prison for a North Carolina man with an extensive history of involvement with violent, far-right groups — and who was caught with a semi-automatic rifle as a felon during a traffic stop in western New York last year.

As previously reported by Raw Story, Michael Alan Jones was active with the the Base, a neo-Nazi terror group, and the white nationalist group Patriot Front. He stormed the U.S. Capitol with the Proud Boys on Jan. 6. Jones also worked as an FBI informant for at least some period of time overlapping with his activity with far-right groups, spanning from 2018 to the time of his arrest in March 2022.

Raw Story had previously revealed that Jones was an FBI informant, a fact that the Jones' lawyer confirmed this week in a court filing....

After Allen shooting, Texas Republican leaders downplay guns, focus on mental health

After a mass shooting on Saturday at an Allen outlet mall ended with eight people dead, Texas Republicans are doubling down on their resistance to gun control legislation.

A gunman used an AR-15-style weapon to open fire on shoppers on Saturday afternoon, killing eight people and injuring at least seven others in the suburb 25 miles north of Dallas. The massacre ended when a police officer, already at the scene, killed the gunman.

The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the gunman as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia. Investigators have been searching a nearby motel at which the suspect had been staying and a home in the Dallas area connected to the suspect. The city of Allen said Sunday that the Texas Department of Public Safety would lead the investigation into the shooting going forward. ...

Biden again demands action after eight killed in Texas mall rampage

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden renewed his call Sunday for a national assault-weapons ban and other gun safety measures, a day after eight people were murdered at a Texas shopping mall in the latest mass shooting to shake the nation. Responders, distressed witnesses and police described scenes of panic and horror in Allen, where video footage shared online showed the shooter exiting a sedan in an outlet mall parking lot Saturday and firing a semi-automatic rifle at people walking nearby. An officer on an unrelated call nearby quickly responded and "neutralized" the shooter, police s......

Supreme Court justice gives Illinois city until Monday to respond to challenge of assault weapons ban

A Supreme Court justice has given the city of Naperville, Illinois, a chance to reply to a challenge to the city and state bans on assault weapons, opening the door to a possible high court review of the issue. Justice Amy Coney Barrett gave the city until Monday to respond to a Naperville gun shop owner who says the ban is unconstitutional and is putting him out of business. Robert Bevis, owner of Law Weapons & Supply, and the National Association for Gun Rights want the bans to be put on hold until lawsuits challenging the bans are resolved. Bevis and the foundation had requested the federal......

Proposed legislation would ban gun shows at all state fairgrounds in California

SAN DIEGO — Three California lawmakers announced proposed legislation Thursday that would prohibit the sale of firearms and ammunition on all state property, effectively ending gun shows on state fairgrounds. The laws would build on legislation passed in 2019 that prohibits gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and in 2021 at the Orange County Fair and Event Center. Both venues had hosted the Crossroads of the West sales several times a year for decades. Senate Bill 915, introduced by state Sen. Dave Min, an Irvine Democrat, would extend the prohibition to all 73 California state fairgrounds. "......
