‘Beyond astonishing’: Marion police chief kept restaurateur updated on raids in real time

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody spoke with the restaurant owner who accused the local newspaper of criminal activity for checking her driver’s license status shortly after he raided its newsroom in August, commiserating about the situation and saying the search yielded “good evidence.” Bodycam footage from Cody shows a phone call between the then-chief and Kari Newell, owner of two Marion establishments, the day officers searched the Marion County Record, the home of its publisher Eric Meyer and the home of city councilwoman Ruth Herbel. Newell had accused the newspa......
The tragic tale of a shrimp fried rice dinner disaster

The tragic tale of a shrimp fried rice dinner disaster

The heartbreaking tragedy of my Wednesday-night dinner began with a simple message from my wife: She was on her way to an appointment and was defrosting a package of shrimp. Great, I thought. I'll make shrimp fried rice. Everybody loves fried rice. And although I think I had only made it once or twice before in my life, it will undoubtedly be fast and easy to make. I even found a terrific-looking recipe called Easy Fried Rice. What could go wrong? I decided to double the recipe so I could get two or three meals out of it, and besides, I was working with a full pound of shrimp. I stopped off at......

Cuba’s economic crisis is worse than after fall of the Soviet Union, economists warn

Cuba, which for decades was one of the largest exporters of sugar in the world, now has to import sugar to meet its domestic demand. Six decades after the Cuban Revolution, the country is again undergoing a severe economic crisis, this time worse than the infamous “Special Period” in the 1990s, as the economic downturn that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union is known. ‘Surrounded by love’: Friends, community remember Kansas police officer killed in line of duty

When Kaitlyn Lauritsen hears the 2004 pop hit “Unwritten” on the radio, she thinks of her former police partner Officer Jonah Oswald. The song is tied to fond memories. Lauritsen met Oswald in 2018 when he joined the Buckner Police Department in Missouri after a brief stint with the Sugar Creek police, about 15 miles west. She said they were “still green” and “eager to learn to do the job well.” They rode around Buckner together in a patrol car, belting out lyrics with Natasha Bedingfield: "Today is where your book begins. The rest is still unwritten." Now, Lauritsen and members of the Fairway......

Italian cheesemaker dies after shelf collapse buries him under thousands of wheels of Grana Padano

A 74-year-old dairy farmer and cheesemaker near Bergamo, Italy, died when a shelf collapse sent thousands of 44-pound wheels of cheese cascading on top of him, authorities said. Giacomo Chiapparini was checking on wheels of parmesan-style Grana Padano around 9 p.m. Sunday when a 30-foot-high shelf gave way, local officials said. About 25,000 wheels of cheese were stored in the warehouse. Chiapparini and his 50-year-old son, Tiziano, had gone to check on the wheels after a machine that cleans off mold and rotates them sent an alarm signal, according to friend and neighbor Bortolo Ghislotti. It ......

Step right up: Workers in this new gelato shop perform circus acts as they serve up vegan scoops

CHICAGO — Red and white pinstripes line the walls, as multicolored balloons hover above the group of magicians, contortionists and jugglers hard at work. Sticky fingers and faces wander about with sugar-fueled smiles, parents in tow. While you might assume that you’ve stumbled into the circus, you’d only be about half-right. In reality, you’ve happened upon Sideshow Gelato — a new Lincoln Square gelato shop with a niche twist. Each of the “scoopers” are young performers honing their sideshow acts. While serving gelato, they sharpen their juggling, magic and performance skills before customers.......
