Boeing leaders address airplane quality crisis and hit to reputation

Last year ended better for Boeing than Wall Street had projected, yet when the earnings details were released Wednesday, the healthy cash flow didn't seem to matter much now. "Boeing's world changed on January 5th when the Alaska Airlines door blew off, and so anything before that date is now of less relevance," financial analyst Rob Stallard of Vertical Research wrote a note to investors. Boeing lost $2.2 billion in 2023, the fifth loss in five bad years, but the best result since 2019. A few weeks ago, that might have been taken as a sign that in 2024 Boeing might finally make it back into t......

Gas leak explosions are happening more often, including deadly blasts in North Texas

If the investigation into Monday’s explosion at a downtown Fort Worth hotel finds it was caused by a natural gas leak, the incident would be part of a worsening trend of such incidents across the country, according to energy sector watchdog groups. The massive explosion at Sandman Signature Hotel, which left 21 people injured, has not been tied to an official cause. But Fort Worth Fire Department authorities have said it was likely a gas explosion, and representatives of Dallas-based natural gas distributor Atmos Energy have been on the scene. Since 2010, incidents like fires and explosions ca......

Surge in antisemitism amid Israel-Hamas war marks ‘frightening time’ for Jews in US and globally

CHICAGO — Rodi Glass survived the Holocaust as a child growing up under Nazi occupation in the Netherlands, where she was forced to wear a yellow Star of David sewn to her clothing to identify herself as a Jew at the age of 6. Eight decades later, the 87-year-old Highland Park resident is disturbed by an unsettling spike in antisemitic incidents and rhetoric amid the Israel-Hamas war, marking a particularly threatening era for Jews locally as well as globally. “It’s a very uncertain time for Jewish people,” she said. “It’s a very frightening time.” The Anti-Defamation League said it has tracke......

Invasive, 'destructive' beetle found in baggage at Detroit Metro Airport

DETROIT — Remains of an invasive beetle from South Asia were found in an unaccompanied international baggage in June at Detroit Metro Airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said. Parts of a Khapra beetle were found during a routine X-ray screening of baggage upon re-entry into the U.S., official said in a statement Tuesday. Screenings showed a bag of rice that originated in India contained the remains, which were later identified by officials from Customs and Borer Protection and U.S. Department of Agriculture, according to the release. "Khapra beetles are not native to the U.S.......

Second crack or break found on Carowinds’ damaged roller coaster, state confirms

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A second crack or break was found in Carowinds largest roller coaster, the state agency inspecting Fury 325 confirmed Friday. Fury 325 has been closed since June 30 after a park visitor spotted a broken support beam as a cart full of riders went by the pillar. Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers Inc., the Swiss company that designed and built the roller coaster, replaced the steel column in mid-July. Inspections by B&M, Carowinds, a third-party testing firm and North Carolina Department of Labor’s Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau are ongoing. The park also ran 500 t......

Illinois governor signs bills giving state power over health insurance prices, Affordable Care Act exchange

Illinois will soon run its own Affordable Care Act health insurance marketplace, and have the power to stop sky-high price increases of plans sold on it. Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a pair of bills Tuesday aimed at giving Illinois more control over health insurance prices and the Affordable Care Act marketplace, also known as the Obamacare exchange, where people can buy individual and family health insurance plans. The bill signings Tuesday came amid criticism aimed at Pritzker for his decision to close enrollment for many people in a separate health care program for immigrants in the country wi......
