Trump's 'pathetic' tantrum over Supreme Court backs him into 'awkward' corner: author

Trump's 'pathetic' tantrum over Supreme Court backs him into 'awkward' corner: author

President Donald Trump's furious reaction to losing at the Supreme Court shows he has trapped himself in an awkward political corner.

During a Tuesday episode of "Inside Trump's Head," longtime Trump biographer Michael Wolff said the president runs on conflict and is willing to cast even his own allies as enemies the moment they cross him.

"This is the thing that he always looks for. This is the conflict," Wolff said. "Today, the court is the enemy."...

Trump's mail ballot rule hits another wall

Trump's mail ballot rule hits another wall

President Donald Trump's rule affecting mail-in ballots was dealt another setback after a federal judge implemented an injunction against it.

According to reporting on Friday, Judge Indira Talwani handed down a preliminary injunction blocking the U.S. Postal Service from setting in motion portions of its new mail-in ballot rule. Talwani had previously handed down a restraining order, but Talwani's ruling replaced her restraining order. Talwani's latest ruling forces appeals to begin anew, legal analyst Chris Geidner noted.

DOJ begs Supreme Court to unblock Trump's mail-ballot crackdown before ballots ship

The Department of Justice is turning to the Supreme Court to greenlight a rule letting the U.S. Postal Service reject mail-in ballots.

On Thursday, Solicitor General D. John Sauer filed an emergency application that asked the justices to lift a temporary restraining order that U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani issued last week. Talwani's restraining order blocked a USPS rule that came from a March executive order by President Donald Trump imposing tighter ballot-mail requirements.

North Carolina is set to begin mailing ballots as soon as September 4, and Alabama on September 9, ahead of the November 3 midterms, the application noted. Sauer's application warned that once those envelopes enter the mail, "there is no retrieving them."...

DOJ's own courtroom promise comes back to sink Trump mail-in ballot rule

DOJ's own courtroom promise comes back to sink Trump mail-in ballot rule

A federal judge blocked the Trump administration's mail-in ballot rule by turning the Justice Department's own courtroom promises against it.

The ruling is the latest twist in the months-long fight over the Trump administration's push to give the federal government a gatekeeping role in mail-in voting. The Supreme Court let the administration move forward on August 24, and the U.S. Postal Service finalized the mail-in ballot rule two days later, which sent states and voting-rights groups racing back to court to block it before mail ballots start going out in September.

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani on Thursday granted a fourteen-day temporary restraining order freezing the mandatory core of the U.S. Postal Service's rule for any election on or before November 3, including envelope-design approvals, voter enrollment in a new federal portal and provisions letting USPS refuse to mail non-compliant ballots....

Trump judge launches 'unusual and extraordinary' attack on civil rights: report

A Texas judge appointed by President Donald Trump launched an "unusual and extraordinary" attack on elections, according to a new report.

Democracy Docket reported on Wednesday that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a ruling that blocked key parts of Texas' voter suppression law. The ruling protects provisions that were previously found to violate federal protections for voters with disabilities.

"It has long been established that mail-in ballots are prone to fraud," Judge Andrew Oldham wrote in a decision that Democracy Docket described as an "unusual and extraordinary attack" on mail-in voting loaded with unsupported claims. "That is why voting by mail jeopardizes election integrity and democracy itself."...

Trump suffers major setback to 'unprecedented' election scheme

The Trump administration suffered a major setback in its attempt to block mail-in voting with a federal judge ruling against it.

On Tuesday, a federal judge blocked President Donald Trump's order forcing the U.S. Postal Service to reject certain ballots. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani from Massachusetts found the order unconstitutional because it came less than 90 days before the midterms and described the Trump order as an "unprecedented directive."

Talwani granted a preliminary injunction against the executive order, which would bar the USPS from transmitting ballots to voters whose names don't appear on state-submitted lists. She found that the administration never mounted a defense of the order itself....
