NYC taxpayers buy $87,000 luxury SUV for Probation Department commissioner

New York City’s Probation Department has cut programs, its workers gripe about low pay, and city government is in a budget crunch — but Probation Commissioner Juanita Holmes has a new, luxurious city-funded car. Holmes travels in an $86,590 Ford Expedition Platinum, purchased in October from a dealership in Rockland County, city records show. The Ford’s standard features include heated leather-trimmed “multi-contour” seats that vibrate with “Active Motion massage,” a high-end Bang & Olufsen stereo system with 22 speakers and a “panoramic” sun roof, the car maker says. After the city bought the......

UAW-Ford agreement secures enough votes to ratify

Enough "yes" votes have been cast by United Auto Workers members employed at Ford Motor Co. to ratify a new four-and-a-half-year deal, according to an analysis by The Detroit News, the third and final approval needed to wrap up negotiations with the Detroit Three. At Ford, more than 68% of votes cast among hourly workers at reporting locals supported the tentative agreement, according to the UAW's vote tracker, after results from Dearborn Truck Plant were added on Friday. That leaves 12,643 votes between the yes and no totals, more than the total hourly employees at the remaining locals yet to......

Econometer: Has enthusiasm for electric cars waned?

General Motors, Ford and Tesla have all warned of an electric vehicle slowdown because they say demand might drop. Auto makers mainly say higher borrowing costs are the issue but some car dealerships say EVs are sitting longer than regular cars. They say consumers are concerned about the range of EVs and lack of infrastructure. In a Cox Automotive survey, 53 percent of consumers said EVs will eventually replace internal combustion engines, but less than a third of dealers agreed. Several dealerships interviewed by CNBC said EVs were taking longer to sell and there was a supply and demand imbal......

Congress tries to save AM radio as automakers threaten to pull the plug

When Ford announced it would stop installing AM radios in its vehicles this spring, it generated so much static among station owners, listeners and legislators that the automaker quickly reversed course. But with Tesla and a growing number of EV manufacturers banishing the original car radio from their high-tech digital dashboards and into the audio graveyard occupied by eight-track players and CD changers, a Congressional subcommittee Tuesday began debating the merits of proposed legislation to make AM receivers standard equipment in all new vehicles. In Chicago, where AM stations including W......

Recession? GM's strong Q1 numbers don't point to one despite fears

Recession concerns may be weighing on consumer minds, but General Motors Co. showed Tuesday those fears aren’t affecting its sales or financial performance. Powered by a successful first three months of the year, the Detroit automaker outperformed Wall Street expectations in its first-quarter earnings. And it increased guidance for the year, upping its adjusted earnings before taxes target to between $11 billion and $13 billion, an improvement over the previous outlook of $10.5 billion to $12.5 billion. The results are the first glimpse into a crucial year for GM and crosstown rivals Ford Moto......
California hits ambitious goal for electric cars two years early

California hits ambitious goal for electric cars two years early

If it seems like there are more Teslas, Chevy Bolts and electric Ford Mustangs on freeways and in driveways across California, there’s a reason for that. There are. New data out Friday show that motorists in California have bought 1.5 million electric vehicles since 2011 — 40% of all electric vehicle sales in the United States — surpassing a goal set by former Gov. Jerry Brown two years early. High gas prices, the improving range of batteries and a decade of California’s regulations on auto companies are driving the change, experts say. “The technology is improving so rapidly and becoming more......
