Body-cam video appears to contradict NYPD version of what led to migrants beating cops in Times Square

NEW YORK — Newly released body camera footage of the chaotic melee between NYPD officers and a group of asylum seekers appears to contradict some of the claims by law enforcement about what ignited the incident that sparked nationwide coverage of migrants attacking the cops in Times Square. At a press conference Thursday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said a “meticulous” multiagency review determined two officers were assaulted after they told a group of young men outside a Midtown shelter to disperse, and one refused. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the group was impeding......

NYC officials ‘definitely’ considering curfews at migrant shelters amid panhandling complaints

The Adams administration is “definitely” considering instituting curfews at all migrant shelters in the city amid complaints about residents at some of them venturing into nearby neighborhoods at night to beg for money, the Daily News has learned. Molly Schaeffer, director of Mayor Eric Adams’ Office of Asylum Seeker Operations, revealed the curfew considerations during a closed-door migrant crisis briefing with local lawmakers Thursday. She did so after Queens Councilwoman Joann Ariola, a Republican, asked why the so-called HERRC shelters, which only house migrants, aren’t subject to curfews ......

Migrant arrivals at border continued to rise over past year while drug seizures fell again

SAN DIEGO — Border agents and customs officers along the California border encountered 72% more migrants in the recently ended fiscal year as compared to two years before, according to recently released federal statistics. The head of Border Patrol in the San Diego area said that marked “a level of activity not seen in over two decades,” with the data backing up the sharp increase in immigrant arrivals that led San Diego County officials in September to declare a humanitarian crisis at the border and request more federal help. During that same three-year period in the region of San Diego and I......

Mayor Adams limits NYC shelter stays to 30 consecutive days for adult migrants

NEW YORK — Single adult migrants will only be able to stay in New York City shelters for 30 consecutive days under a new policy Mayor Eric Adams announced Friday amid a ongoing influx of asylum-seekers. The policy, which takes effect immediately, means all single adult migrants who apply for shelter will receive notices upon being accepted for placement informing them they have 30 days before vacating their beds. According to Adams’ office, migrants who get 30-day notices will also receive “intensified casework services” aimed at helping them find their own housing, in New York or elsewhere. I......

Most New Yorkers say they support American dream, but many OK with ending immigration, poll says

NEW YORK — A majority of New Yorkers say the U.S. should live out welcoming words etched on the Statue of Liberty, but almost a third say the country does not need to continue welcoming any new immigrants, according to a new poll released as the state struggles with the strain of the asylum-seeker crisis. In the statewide Siena College survey, published Tuesday, the Statue of Liberty exhortation — “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” — received support from 69% of voters, with 21% opposed. And a broad, bipartisan majority of New Yorkers said assimilatin......

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul commits $20 million more in aid to tens of thousands of migrants

NEW YORK — Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday that the state will pour an additional $20 million into aiding asylum-seekers in New York City with the goal of helping them exit emergency shelters, secure work authorizations and manage their claims for asylum. The newly announced outlay is in addition to $1.5 billion the state has already directed toward the city to address the migrant crisis, which has strained the city’s social services infrastructure since last April. The new state funds are intended to speed the flow of migrants’ social services casework and connect them with services relate......
