Marijuana use raises risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke, studies say

A pair of studies have found that older adults who use marijuana have more risk of heart attack or stroke when hospitalized than non-users and are more likely to develop heart failure if they are a daily user. The two studies, which have not been published, were presented Monday at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia. Both studies excluded cannabis users who also smoke tobacco to focus solely on the cardiovascular effects of marijuana consumption. The AHA recommends against smoking tobacco or marijuana because of the potential damaging effects on the heart, lungs......

John Fetterman got hearing aids for sensorineural hearing loss. Here's what that means

PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, cardiomyopathy, stroke, and depression — common medical conditions that affect millions of Americans. His latest diagnosis may be his most common one yet: hearing loss. On March 31, when Fetterman was released from the hospital after being treated for depression, his office said he also had been diagnosed with "mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss" and was fitted for hearing aids. Hearing loss affects an estimated 50 million Americans, and sensorineural hearing loss is the most common form of it......

Coroner reveals Atlanta rapper Lil Keed’s cause of death

Lil Keed, the Atlanta rapper who died suddenly in May 2022, died from eosinophilia, according to a coroner’s report. The “Snake” rapper was 24 when he died. He was a member of Young Thug’s YSL record label. Eosinophilia occurs when a person’s body produces too many of a specific type of white blood cells, called eosinophils. Serious cases of eosinophilia are often caused by blood cancer, parasites or autoimmune diseases, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The Los Angeles County medical examiner could not determine what led to Lil Keed’s case of eosinophilia, People magazine reported. “He had b......

Pa. Senate candidate John Fetterman is in good health, his doctor says in a new medical report

PHILADELPHIA — John Fetterman’s primary care physician said he continues to recover well from his stroke after an examination Friday, saying the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate “has no work restrictions and can work full duty in public office.” Clifford Chen, a doctor at UPMC in Duquesne, released a detailed medical report based on his examination, which the campaign provided to The Philadelphia Inquirer late Tuesday. The report, the latest information from someone who has examined Fetterman since the campaign released a note from his cardiologist in June, confirms the campaign’s ongoing as......

John Fetterman returns to the Pa. Senate campaign trail in Erie

ERIE, Pa. — One day short of three months since a stroke nearly killed him, Democratic Senate nominee John Fetterman was “Back in Black” before more than 1,000 eager voters. To the tune of the AC/DC hit, Fetterman, dressed in a black hoodie and jeans, took the stage with his wife, Gisele, who introduced him as “a stroke survivor” — and the next U.S. senator from Pennsylvania. Fetterman opened his remarks with a joke about whether he was actually in Erie, or addressing 1,400 supporters in his basement — a reference to his opponent’s “basement tracker” that marked his absence while he recovered ......

John Fetterman got a defibrillator after his stroke. But doctors say the campaign’s story 'doesn’t make sense'

PHILADELPHIA — It’s been more than a week since Lt. Gov. John Fetterman celebrated his win in Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senate primary from a Lancaster hospital, where he was recovering from a stroke and the implantation of a combination defibrillator-pacemaker. But the campaign’s explanation of his medical treatment doesn’t entirely make sense, according to cardiologists. Fetterman’s campaign has said he’s on his way to a full recovery. Yet as that recovery continues at his home in Braddock, Fetterman hasn’t publicly answered questions himself about his health. And his campaign has refused mu......
