Embattled MAGA rep pressured another staffer to send nudes: report

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) was accused by a former staffer of asking for sex and nude photos via text years before the affair with his staffer who died by suicide last year, according to a report from the San Antonio Express News.

During his 2020 congressional campaign, Gonzales reportedly asked his campaign's political director when she went to sleep and then started a series of inappropriate exchanges and requests. His former aide, who declined to share her name due to privacy concerns, shared the text messages with the news outlet.

“What kind of panties do you wear?” Gonzales asked via text message.

"Within hours, the married Navy veteran from San Antonio was asking for nude photos and describing how he wanted to have sex with her and have her 'squeeze my balls,'" the San Antonio Express News reported. "At the end of the night, after she replied 'Nope' to yet another request for a photo, he replied, '47 nos is about my limit.'"

But the married father of six, a MAGA loyalist endorsed by President Donald Trump, apparently persisted. He kept asking for pictures.

“I know what I want and won’t stop until I get it,” he wrote via text from June 15, 2020.

The staffer apparently responded with a facepalm emoji and wrote: "You better do that in Congress. And take me with you."

Last month, Gonzales admitted to a long-reported extramarital affair with Regina Santos-Aviles, a married congressional staffer who died in a gruesome suicide last year. Text messages during their involvement suggested she was uncomfortable with some of what Gonzales was asking her to do. Both the Office of Congressional Conduct and the House Ethics Committee are investigating.

He confirmed the affair on "The Joe Pags show," calling the relationship a "mistake" and "a lapse in judgment."

Republicans flee for the exits as Trump steers GOP into 'disaster': 'Easier to walk away'

President Donald Trump and his Republican Party faced a serious battle as another GOP lawmaker decided to end his bid for reelection, according to reports Friday.

Facing a growing number of Republican exits, a low approval rating, uncertainty around U.S. military strikes in Iran and a looming conflict in the Middle East, Trump now has a bigger problem ahead of the midterm elections, The Daily Beast reported.

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX), who admitted to an affair with a staffer who died in a gruesome suicide last year, announced Thursday he would drop out of the runoff against right-wing influencer Brandon Herrera.

Gonzales is among three other Republican representatives who announced they would not seek reelection just this week, including Reps. Ryan Zinke (R-MT) and Burgess Owens (R-UT).

Gonzales's departure comes as 34 Republicans have planned to retire this year as Democrats eye taking back the majority of the House and Senate this fall.

"Regardless of what they say in public, plenty of GOP lawmakers are getting internal polling that suggests Trump has steered them into a disaster," Democratic strategist Max Burns told The Beast.

“Even GOP lawmakers don’t feel like they can exert enough influence on the White House to course correct, so it’s easier to just walk away,” Burns said.

MAGA Rep stuns when asked, 'Aren’t some things bigger than politics?'

A GOP lawmaker on Wednesday continued to stand by Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) despite growing calls for the embattled Republican to step down over sexual misconduct allegations following the grisly suicide of a House staffer last year.

CNN anchor and congressional correspondent Manu Raju asked Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) whether he felt Gonzales should step down. Nehls defended Gonzales and explained why he should not leave his position in the GOP majority House, especially ahead of the high-stakes midterm elections, in an interview shared by Raju on X.

"He's not been indicted for anything. Does it look good? No, I don't like the appearance of it. He's got a problem. Don't get me wrong. The optics are horrible," Nehls said. "But I would, in no way, ever resign right now... accusations aren't enough. If he does that, then you've got to give the gavel to Hakeem Jeffries. And I'm sure the Democrats would love that, I would love that, but no I wouldn't do that for any reason."

Raju asked, "Aren’t some things bigger than politics?"

"No, no. Not up here, not the way we do what we do in the House,” Nehls said.

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) was accused by Adrian Aviles, the estranged husband of congressional aide Regina Santos-Aviles, of having an affair with his wife. Aviles discovered the trysts in May 2024 through sexually explicit text messages between his wife and the married congressman.

According to Aviles, Gonzales "abused his power" by seducing Santos-Aviles, the congressman's regional district director. After the affair was discovered, Aviles claims staff retaliated by isolating his wife. Santos-Aviles, 35, died by self-immolation in September 2025. Aviles now contends her death was a "cry for help" rather than suicide.
