President Donald Trump was caught on the back foot Friday when a reporter asked him about the reports his Food and Drug Administration commissioner is set to be fired, not even appearing to understand what was being asked of him.
"What's going on with Marty Makary?" asked a reporter.
"Nothing much," said Trump. "He's fine."
"Are you going to fire him?" the reporter followed up.
"Uhhh. I've been reading about it, but I know nothing about it," he replied.
This comes after the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has already "signed off" on a plan to fire Makary, after the president clashed with him on abortion and drug policy, and most recently on the speed with which the FDA is acting to approve flavored nicotine vapes.
It also comes after Makary has come under heavy fire from some commentators about the extent to which he and his allies have blocked promising new medical therapies.
