President Donald Trump’s latest attack on a Democratic Senate nominee and his wife spurred a wave of rebuke on Sunday by critics who called him a racist and a convicted felon.
Trump took to Truth Social the night before to share an image comparing himself and First Lady Melania Trump to Abdul El-Sayed and his wife, Sarah Jukaku.
The image includes the misspelled caption, "Two VERY DIFFERENT America's," and shows Trump and his wife in formal attire alongside El-Sayed and Jukaku, who wears a traditional Islamic headscarf.
The image also uses El-Sayed’s full name – Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed – similar to how Trump often refers to former President Barack Obama as Barack Hussein Obama.
Karrin Vasby Anders, a communication studies professor at Colorado State University, has argued this is a “dog whistle” designed to highlight the Arabic origins of Obama’s middle name.
Kyle Kulinski, a progressive political commentator and podcast host, appeared to agree.
“All republicans have is racism,” Kulinski wrote in a social media post on X to his more than 560,000 followers.
Alex Cole, a progressive commentator, noted Jukaku is a licensed psychiatrist, and met her future husband while studying at the University of Michigan.
Cole shared his description of the images in a social media post on X to his more than 326,000 followers.
“One side is a convicted felon married to a former nude model," he wrote. "The other is a Michigan-born doctor married to a psychiatrist."
The progressive media organization MeidasTouch weighed in on the matter by describing the “two very different America’s” as “the Epstein class vs. regular Americans who know how to spell.”
Marek Magierowski, a Polish diplomat and policy analyst, also gave his take on the differences between the first lady and Jukaku.
“Sarah Jukaku is a psychiatrist, she holds a medical degree from Columbia and a master’s degree from [University of Oxford],” Magierowski wrote. “Melanie [sic] Trump is a former model.”
