Former President Donald Trump on Thursday lauded the United States Supreme Court for shutting down race-based affirmative action policies used by colleges as one factor when determining admissions.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, the former president suggested that the end of these policies would open up doors for people who have supposedly been harmed by efforts to correct the history of underrepresentation of Black Americans in institutions of higher learning.
"This is a great day for America," wrote Trump. "People with extraordinary ability and everything else necessary for success, including future greatness for our Country, are finally being rewarded. This is the ruling everyone was waiting and hoping for and the result was amazing. It will also keep us competitive with the rest of the world. Our greatest minds must be cherished and that’s what this wonderful day has brought. We’re going back to all merit-based—and that’s the way it should be!"
Trump is the son of a wealthy real estate magnate who guaranteed construction loans on Trump's projects early in his career to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.
Despite these advantages, Trump in the 1990s would go on to lose massive sums of money thanks to his failing casino businesses, and in the years 1990 and 1991, his core businesses generated losses of $250 million per year.
