Donald Trump has spent the better part of the last week trying to clean up his language after adopting some of Adolf Hitler's ideology about blood purity. According to former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, the ex-president knew exactly what he was doing.
Republicans struggled to try and dismiss the comments. Some claimed he was just "joking," a common refrain, and reframe, of whatever objectionable thing the ex-president had uttered. Other lawmakers went so far as to claim that it wasn't "real," and that Trump simply uses that kind of language to get Republican voters excited. Some outright embraced it while the Republican Party stayed silent.
When Trump appeared before another rally, he claimed he'd never read Hitler's book, cable news unearthed an interview with his first wife, Ivana, recalling his obsession with a book of Hitler's speeches he kept in his nightstand.
Speaking to CNN's Jim Acosta, Cohen confessed that it's likely true Trump never read Hitler's full book because he doesn't read much. The book is also very large. Still, there are reports that Trump has a fascination with Hitler.
"It's not true obviously," Cohen said. "It's just added to the plethora of lies that he has told the American people while he was president or post his presidency. I mean, for God's sake it's word for word out of Hitler's mouth, regurgitated by Donald, and then all of a sudden, you know, it's not the same thing, right? Now of course he's trying to walk it back. but that's something that he has done over and over and over again."
Cohen went on to recall a meeting he wrote about in his book "Disloyal." Trump and another Trump Organization executive who happened to be of German descent was sitting next to Cohen, whose father is a Holocaust survivor.
"Donald, knowing that my father is a Holocaust survivor, literally turned around, stopped the conversation, and made mention — he goes, 'You know, I bet your family chased Michael's family through the Red Forest,'" he recalled Trump saying. "I mean, I wrote about this, what, three years ago plus. So, the fact is everything that I have been saying for years now. It's slowly dripping out to be factually accurate. It's who he is, and if he thinks that he could lie and get away with it, that's just what he's going to do. He's gotten very good at it."
Acosta played another clip of Trump ranting "No one knows what's going on" and that children of immigrants are coming into the United States and "no one knows what language they're speaking."
"When he says nobody knows what's going on — no, no, no. Donald doesn't know what's going on," said Cohen. "And Donald doesn't speak any other language other than English. So, I promise you that there are people in this country involved with the immigration service who know exactly what language these people are speaking."
