Policy expert William Becker published an op-ed in The Hill arguing that President Donald Trump has one final opportunity to redeem his legacy by resigning on health grounds.
Becker detailed the administration's controversies, including constitutional violations, conflicts of interest, pardon abuse, military deployment against civilians, among many others.
Despite voters giving Trump a second opportunity to improve his legacy, Becker wrote, each time he has made matters worse. He also warned that if Trump refuses to resign, Congress is responsible for removing him before irreparable damage occurs.
He argued voluntary resignation would prevent Trump's legacy from becoming merely a historical "morality lesson," and health concerns provide a plausible face-saving rationale.
Becker concluded, “He doesn’t understand, or perhaps will not admit, that he is memorializing a decade in which he caused decay, division, degradation, degeneration and disgrace,” adding, “Once Trump leaves office, the plaques on his monuments will explain how the government failed America and nearly allowed the world’s continuing democracy to slip away.”
