Political analysts and observers were aghast on Wednesday as a new report revealed the impetus for President Donald Trump's most recent abrupt reversal.

NBC News reported that Saudi Arabia had revoked the U.S.'s access to its military bases to conduct operations for "Project Freedom," Trump's plan to guide ships through the Strait of Hormuz and ward off attacks from Iranian ships. That seemed to help explain why Trump abruptly reversed course about Project Freedom on Tuesday and said his administration would pause the operation to focus on negotiations with the Iranian regime.

"A call between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman did not resolve the issue, the two U.S. officials said, forcing the president to pause Project Freedom in order to restore U.S. military access to the critical airspace," the report reads.

Political analysts and observers shared their reactions on social media.

"U.S. bases getting smoked, Saudis nixing U.S. operations - even Strait aside, pretty astonishing losses for the U.S., with Trump admin’s total incompetence at managing Gulf states a big factor," political commentator Patrick Osgood posted on Bluesky.

"Nobody tells Trump what to do. Nobody except Russia. And China. And Iran. And Saudi Arabia," Brandon Friedman, a former Obama administration staffer, posted on Bluesky.

"Who is running this f------ war? Israel? Saudi Arabia? Apparently, it is not the U.S. We are just the hammer and the dupes. And Trump, yet again, proves how easily he can be manipulated," Paul Ferguson, a military veteran, posted on Bluesky.

"Grandpa Chaos now realizes his big fat pie hole & special decrees from his dead-end Truth Social are getting old," Pam Spalding, a political commentator, posted on Bluesky. "He's done nothing but cause disaster, while we watch him drain our wallets for his damn ballroom/bunker. Saudi just told him to sit his a-- down."
