Trump’s mental state prompts dire warning from Mark Kelly to brace for ‘extreme measures’

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) is raising concerns about President Donald Trump’s state of mind if Republicans lose next week’s midterms, warning that the president could resort to “pretty extreme measures.”

TMZ’s Jacob Wasserman caught up with Kelly in New York City on Tuesday and asked, as TMZ put it, what “crazy ideas” Trump might have “when backed into a corner by a Democrat-controlled Congress.”

Kelly said Trump has shown over the years that when he’s stressed, he will “take some pretty extreme measures.”

“I mean, this is the guy who, when he didn’t win the election in 2020, and he wasn’t happy about it, couldn’t accept it, he sent a mob to attack Congress,” Kelly said in the interview, referring to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

“So yeah, I mean lame-duck Donald Trump second time around? Yeah, I think we’ve got to be concerned.”

Wasserman also raised Trump’s 1,300-word post attacking comedian Bill Maher and asked how the president might respond if Democrats investigate his family. Kelly said the Maher post “just shows where he’s at,” adding that “for the most egregious stuff that this president did, there needs to be investigations and accountability.”

But Kelly said lawmakers must not let Trump’s potential reaction sway them.

“We can’t be intimidated by a guy who thinks he’s a bully. And he sort of is a bully,” Kelly said, before calling Trump a “marginally successful real estate developer” and a “failed president.”

Lawmakers can’t let Trump “change what we do and how we conduct ourselves in the United States Senate,” he said.

Kelly has himself been targeted by the Trump administration, which threatened legal action against him last year.
