President Donald Trump set off alarm bells with his reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court's third ruling against his mail-in voting order.
The 80-year-old president accused the justices of political cowardice and disloyalty Tuesday morning in a 463-word Truth Social post after they upheld a lower court's injunction blocking new mail-in ballot verification requirements ahead of the November midterm elections.
"Republicans just got another bad decision from the United States Supreme Court, one that the Court System took forever to give," Trump posted, "and then blamed it, in part, on no time left to implement a solution to our totally CORRUPT and out of control Mail-In voting 'disaster,' which is a laughing stock all over the World, and where we are the only country that has to endure such a Nation Destroying SCAM."
"Certain Justices are petrified of these crazed and depraved Democrats, and are totally unable to show the courage necessary to save our America," Trump added, complaining that "the Supreme Court has really let our Country down!"
The president's screed was viewed by critics as an attack on the court's independence and raised questions about his mental health.
"This statement by Trump outlines a dangerous future it is not merely a rejection of a ruling but a signal that in the times ahead the criterion for appointments will be personal loyalty rather than constitutional merit," warned writer Anand Sharma. "When those in power begin to deem the highest court illegitimate the very foundations of democracy crack Do you want a democracy where courts serve as guardians of the Constitution or as a political shield for a single leader?"
