Quake death toll nears 25,000 as German, Austrian teams pause work

The death toll from earthquakes in Turkey and Syria neared 25,000 on Saturday as fewer victims were being found alive and German and Austrian rescue teams suspended their work due to security concerns.

In Turkey alone, at least 21,043 people were killed and 80,097 others injured by the two strong quakes that jolted the region earlier this week, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in Diyarbakır province.

TEVEKKELI, Turkey (Reuters) - Drone footage in southern Turkey showed a fissure slicing across fields, roads, streams and hillsides, caused by a massive earthquake that struck the region at the start of the week.

The jagged scar of bare and cracked earth, opened up by Monday's quake, cut deep into embankments and ran along expanses of open land up to the horizon near the town of Tevekkeli, in Turkey's southern province of Kahramanmaras.

'Miracle baby' still being cared for in hospital in northern Syria

Aya, the so-called "miracle baby" who was born under the rubble after this week's devastating earthquake destroyed her home in northern Syria, was still recovering in hospital on Friday despite reports that several had come forward to adopt her.

"My wife is breastfeeding little Aya," her attending physician and hospital manager Khaled Attiyeh told dpa. The couple have a four-month-old daughter of their own, as well as a three-year-old son.

Newborn, toddlers survive days in rubble, bringing joy amid earthquake tragedy

ANTAKYA, Turkey (Reuters) - Crouched under concrete slabs and whispering "inshallah" (God willing), the rescuers carefully reached into the rubble, then passed down the line their prize - a 10-day-old newborn who survived four days with his mother in the collapsed building.

His eyes wide open, Turkish baby Yagiz Ulas was wrapped in a shiny thermal blanket and carried to a field medical centre in Samandag, Hatay province, on Friday. Emergency workers also carried his mother, dazed and pale but conscious, on a stretcher, video images from Turkey's disaster agency showed.
