Jon Stewart destroys Republican arguments against background checks
On his show Thursday night, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart systematically mocked Republicans who voiced opposition to expanding criminal background checks on gun purchases.
“Only the United States Senate could take something that has 86 percent support of all Americans and an eight votes majority in the Senate itself as a no,” he said. “That’s a no. Did these cunt punters — I think that is trademarked by Delta Gamma — did these guys pass anything of substance?”
Noting that the Senate approved an amendment that prohibited the address of gun owners from being published, Stewart angrily remarked the only constitutional right that was being restricted in the wake of several mass shootings was the First Amendment.
Republicans in the Senate also took aim at video games, claiming they encouraged violence because the players were “literally shooting at people.” But Stewart noted that players were “literally” shooting at a series of zeros and ones, not people.
He was particularly frustrated by Republicans who argued that background checks were pointless because criminals didn’t follow laws.
“Right,” he said. “But people who steal guns do not submit to our rules about stealing, but we still have them. Here’s what so crazy about this. The people in our country who spend millions of dollars to get elected to a legislative body known as the Senate are making the argument there is really no point in making laws because criminals are just going to end up breaking them.”
Stewart pointed out Republicans hypocritically supported expanding the government’s power to monitor U.S. citizens in the name of fighting terrorism — even though guns had killed a staggeringly larger number of Americans than terrorist attacks.
