Young Turks host Ana Kasparian lit into Republicans on Monday for attacking Planned Parenthood of America and threatening to instigate another federal government shutdown if it is not defunded.
“It’s disgusting. It’s beyond misleading, and the Republican Party again shows you how little they care about the middle class or working class,” she said. “All they care about is misleading people and pandering to the conservative base, which is full of f*cking idiots who are also very, very ill-informed.”
Co-host John Iadarola noted that a bill to defund the health organization failed to get the necessary 60 votes on Monday to be sent to the Senate floor, saying that while the Democrats’ “tepid defense” was enough this time around, the debate would continue in the fall.
Kasparian also pointed out that the organization is already barred from using federal funding for abortions, except in cases involving rape or incest.
“Let’s talk about how childish and irresponsible the Republican Party is,” she said. “There are currently members of the Republican Party that are threatening to stall or shut down the government if Democrats don’t vote in favor of defunding Planned Parenthood.”
She also defended Planned Parenthood as a resource for other health services, including comprehensive testing for sexually-transmitted diseases, saying that it can cost $200 for uninsured women to receive that kind of test in Los Angeles at other clinics, while Planned Parenthood can offer it to low-income women for free. Other services like pap smears, she added, can also be expensive at regular hospitals.
“This isn’t a war on women — it’s a war on health,” Kasparian said.
