Actor Morgan Freeman's 33-year-old step-granddaughter was reportedly stabbed to death early Sunday in Washington Heights, New York City.

According to the New York Daily News, police found E'Dena Hines lying in the street at around 3 a.m. on Sunday with several knife wounds to her upper body.

A 30-year-old man who police have tentatively identified as Hines' current boyfriend was found kneeling over the body repeating some form of quasi-religious chant. A knife was also reportedly recovered from the scene.

Paramedics raced Hines to the Harlem Medical Center, but medical personnel were unable to save her life.

"The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer," said Freeman in a statement. "Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace."

The man in custody has not yet been charged pending a psychiatric evaluation.

Hines is the granddaughter of Jeannette Adair Bradshaw, Freeman's first wife, to whom he was married from 1967 to 1979.
