A transgender woman was attacked with a hammer in New York on early Wednesday morning, in what police are calling a potential hate crime.

Local news station ABC7NY is reporting that a 28-year-old transgender woman was walking down a sidewalk at 6 a.m. in Queens when a man ambushed her and struck her in the back of the head with a hammer.

As he was attacking the woman, he reportedly yelled out, "This is what you get for being gay!"

The woman was treated for severe bleeding from the head at a nearby hospital, but has since been released. Police say the attacker is still at large and they have yet to identify any potential suspects.
