Maybe Donald Trump shouldn't have picked such a public fight with Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

During an interview with WBUR's On Point Radio on TuesdayCleveland Plain Dealer chief political reporter Henry Gomez said that many top Republican operatives in Ohio are refusing to help out Donald Trump's campaign.

"John Kasich controls the Republican Party machine in Ohio, and that shouldn't be understated for what that means," Gomez explained. "It means that most of the top political operatives in the state are unwilling to work for Donald Trump's campaign, or work in coordination with it in anyway."

Instead, he says Kasich's team has been putting most of its efforts into reelecting Sen. Rob Portman. He also expressed skepticism that even a late push could help the RNC match the Democrats' turnout efforts in Ohio.

"For months now, Hillary Clinton has been way ahead of Donald Trump and the RNC and they're still unable to completely play catch-up," he said.
