President Donald Trump took to Twitter early on Thursday to rail against the investigation being run by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Reacting to the news that Mueller was investigating the president for potential obstruction of justice over his firing of former FBI Director James Comey, Trump complained that Mueller was trying to bust him for obstructing the "phony" Russia investigation.

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story," Trump fumed. "Nice."

Roughly an hour later, the president went back on Twitter to once again decry the investigation as a "WITCH HUNT" against him.

On Wednesday night, the Washington Post reported that Mueller was probing whether Trump tried to block the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election by firing Comey. Trump reportedly told Russian government officials the day after the Comey firing that dismissing the FBI director relieved the "great pressure" he felt from the Russia investigation.

Trump had previously not been under investigation until he fired Comey last month, the Post confirmed.
