On Thursday, MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace questioned whether John Kelly stays in the White House to protect President Donald Trump from himself.

Pointing to remarks by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Wallace said, "Maybe he's trying to protect the president from himself and what Lindsey Graham accurately describes as almost a childlike capacity to sort of bend to the will of anybody who calls him smart and handsome."

Wall Street Journal political reporter Eli Stokols said that accurately describes what Kelly sees as his mission, but the intense media scrutiny on this White House's chain of command is only going to make the situation worse.

"The idea that the president is some sort of childlike figure who needs constant supervision, that is something that obviously touches a nerve," said Stokols.

"He hates that perception, he really bristles at it," he said.
