In a video initially posted to Snapchat and later uploaded to YouTube, white members of Virginia Tech's women's lacrosse team were heard using the n-word when singing along to a song.
The Roanoke Times reported that John Sung, the team's coach, apologized for the incident and called it a "teachable moment" after some of his players were embroiled in the scandal.
The 13-second video, which appears to have been initially posted to Snapchat by one of the team's members, shows multiple players using the slur while singing along to the song "Freaky Friday" by white rapper Lil Dicky. TMZ noted that the lyric came during a guest verse by singer Chris Brown, and the song's message suggests that Dicky knows he could only use the loaded term if he were black.
