A member of the Texas Republican Party's platform committee last week boasted that he was "very proud" to be a "white nationalist" -- but now he's insisting he's not a racist.
The Texas Observer reports that longtime Texas GOP activist Ray Myers recently admitted on Facebook to being a white nationalist, although he denies that he meant anything racial with his remark.
"Damn Right I'm a WHITE NATIONALIST and very Proud of it," he wrote in a Facebook message.
When contacted by the Texas Observer about his post, the 74-year-old Myers claimed that what he meant to say was he's a Trump-style nationalist who happens to be white -- not a white nationalist like Richard Spencer or David Duke.
"I am Anglo and I’m very proud of it, just like black people and brown people are proud of their race," he told the Texas Observer. "I am a patriot. I am very proud of my country. And white nationalist, all that means is America first. That’s exactly what that means. That’s where the president’s at."
Myers went on to tell the Texas Observer that he counts many people of color as his friends, thus meaning he can't be a racist.
"I’m a tea party guy and I’ve got brown and black and American Indians in our tea parties," he said.
